It's not about what problems are fun to sit with, but how the related head-space spills into my life. If I go into a bookshop, how many books are relevant? If I talk with friends over beers, how many topics spark with interest, how much can I contribute in return? Puzzles are great for this.

On the insular side: competitive design for esports is pretty narrow, but you've got sports theory. Combat encounter design is even more isolated, with the same handful of sources and influences referencing each other. I've enjoyed working on both over the years, but I think puzzles are special.

Different design work over the years has led me into different head-spaces as I bounce between a bunch of related ideas. Some of these spaces are narrow and insular. Others are expansive and rich. Puzzle design work leads to the latter space, because *everything* can be thought of as a puzzle.

in what may prove a poor decision, I bought an apartment 😅 It's a significant upgrade from my current arrangements, and I keep surprising myself with realizations like "I can bake bread again!" because it has an actual kitchen space. Gonna make so many muffins 😋

Made it to the end somehow. Jesus. Most horror has the safety of "it's not real, it can't hurt you", but this one, oof. Sure, there's the wish, but that's just a way for the movie to shortcut into very real relationship anxiety and horror. Wish I could have found it funny.

The bits that landed best for me in Resident Evil were the most physically grounded and practical fx: fumbling guns, searching for ammo, hopping a fence, most of the first act really. Some of the situation humor/horror of later bits was fun too, though.

I think practical fx is one of those constraints that demands inventiveness and restraint, which--in the right hands--pays off as better surprise and delight for the audience than when you can literally just show anything with cg. All the tricks of cinematography and editing become more important.

I keep thinking of Resident Evil in comparison to Evil Dead 2. There's a similar spirit to the structure, a series of horror gags. But the techniques are very different. Resident Evil is happy to show the thing directly with heavy cg, where Evil Dead 2 had tighter tech constraints with practical fx

There's a fun trick you can play on yourself as a game dev. When the development process is hard, just think "It'll sure be satisfying when we ship, though!" And then when you have post-ship blues, just think "It'll sure be fun when we're back to development again!"

oh you are in for a treat! Those first 3 seasons are a delightful mix of campy monster-of-the-week and conspiracy drama. It doesn't always hit, and some things become strained over the longer arcs of later seasons, but you should know within an episode or two if it's your jam.
