I have, in fact, played Mercutio and had an excellent time. Tybalt got overexcited in the duel and broke my rapier. I improvised something along the lines of "HALT! You wouldn't strike an unarmed foe!! Benvolio, lend me your blade!" so I could finish the duel and die properly. 😂

the frother spins and throws water directly out to the sides, so if you angle it so all sides stay within the sink it's fine!

So I find the bag. Obviously, the mouse has gotten to it. But did it just eat the Rolos? Of course not. I find a HOARD of Rolos emptied of filling. This little caramel connoisseur bit open each one, sucked out the caramel centre, then piled the unwanted chocolate behind the soup cans. /fin

I'm not really expecting to do anything more than chase it away, but somehow after emptying most of the bottom shelf I manage to corner it behind the sugar bin and trap it in a glass. Success! My toddler is enchanted. 3/

Against my better judgement I have looked at this Granta story. I'm no expert but I read a lot of magazine submissions and can tell you that a not insignificant number of LLM-generated slop starts with this exact construction: Short opening sentence. Not [x], but [y], like [z]. Granta story:
First line of the Granta story: "They say the grove still hums at noon. Not the bees’ neat industry or the clean rasp of cutlass on vine, but a belly sound – as if the earth swallows a shout and holds it there."

So I just finished The Iron Garden Sutra by @thesuiway.bsky.social. This book rules. I love my socially awkward anxiety monk and his grumpy engineer. I love doomed expeditions and weird non-human consciousness and ghost ships in space. Highly, highly recommend getting your hands on this ASAP!!

Saint of Bright Doors might seem like a stretch, but if you like WWW, you'll probably like a vast world governed by gods and politics far outside our character's sphere of influence that our character nevertheless ends up challenging. It's also one of the best books published in the last decade.

Witch Hat Atelier is a manga series that might just be my favourite manga since Fullmetal Alchemist. The way it interrogates its magic systems in its worldbuilding feels very much in line with Suvi and the wizards in WWW. Also, the art is just incredibly gorgeous.

WWW is obviously heavily Ghibli-inspired and Howl's Moving Castle fits that perfectly (Hayao Miyazaki agrees). It's also the perfect book. Whimsical, weird, and deeply lovable. If you've only seen the movie, you should read the book.

Cracked open the copy of the Year's Best Canadian F&SF Vol. 3 I just picked up at Can*Con, only to discover my little cat necromancy story got an honourable mention! 🙀 Big thanks for the shout-out @ourmankoto.bsky.social!! Hugely appreciate the work you do putting these anthologies together.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS 2024.

There were more wonderful stories by Canadian authors in 2024 than I could include in the limited space I had available. This list of Honourable Mentions is provided in the hopes that you will seek out these stories and enjoy them as much as I have.

A list of (exceptionally excellent) stories follows. The second page of honourable mentions. At the top is listed "Schrödinger's Bones," André Geleynse, Small Wonders Issue 13.

wasps chased me inside so instead of eating my lunch in the sun, I built Hero Forge versions of my characters in Last Train from Deadwall
A 3D model of Brick: a dark-skinned non-binary rock troll. They are wearing heavy work boots and cargo pants, and a bright hi-vis orange and yellow work coat. A gas mask covers the bottom half of their face, but above it you can see multiple piercings on their large ears and a shock of white hair.A digital 3D model of Knucklebone, the main character of the story, who also happens to be a skeleton. He is wearing work pants, boots, and gloves, and an open hi-vis orange and yellow vest over his ribcage. He's carrying a large sledgehammer, and on his back is a large engine sputtering black fumes, which is what's powering his ability to move his body despite his lack of any musculature. His eye sockets are hidden behind those sunglasses that construction workers always wear.

Just realized both my most recently published stories begin in the rain, but with dramatically different tones.
Screenshot from my website showing the first few lines of each story.

First story: The Robot and the Witch.
"Do you remember, Robot, how we first met?
It was raining, and I was bored. I was only six or seven then, I think. [...] Old rafters groaned under the weight of the water, overflowing gutters gurgled gleefully, and I roamed the labyrinthine hallways in search of entertainment."
Published in Heartlines Spec, Issue 5, July 2024.

Second story: Schrödinger's Bones.
"It is raining on the night you dig up your dead kitten's bones. The downpour pummels your shoulders like June bus and rolls down your bent back like rivulets of blood. Your clothes cling to your skin and drag you towards the dirt."
Published in Small Wonders, Issue 13, July 2024.
