Did we cancel D-Day because of a little rough weather? No. Play the damn game.

Readers added context

D-Day was delayed by a day because of the weather

100% I build into my course a ton of math refresher work and I go many over specific examples in class of doing the algebra, estimating, etc to help students remember (or learn) these things You lose it if you don't use it and I do my best to set a good example for them to follow

I let my students use calculators but when they come to me with a very wrong answer I ask them to, without using the calculator, tell me if their answer makes sense or not. If they can't estimate an answer and rely just on the calculator output, that is a big warning sign

I don't think it should be too controversial to believe that students sometimes should have to do things that they find boring or a little tedious in the course of their education, even if they don't really want to

Watching this History Channel documentary on Ulysses S. Grant (called, I believe, "Grant") and it's good but it really gives the impression that everyone who died in the Civil War died of a head shot

I feel like the times my students spend on developing basic mathematical concepts — estimation, algebraic manipulation, dimensional analysis — lead to the some of the most valuable skills they develop in foundational chemistry courses

"For example, as he tells his students, performing mental arithmetic might distract them while they are trying to learn how to do a more complex math problem." I don't know. It's my experience that students who struggle to do mental arithmetic almost always struggle with more complex math problems

Thanks to @kvasquez.bsky.social for a wonderful conversation that contributed to her reporting on generative AI in the chemistry classroom for Chemical and Engineering News. cen.acs.org/education/un...
To Pearson and many other educators, learning how to problem solve is one of the most valuable benefits of a college education. “We teach problem-solving in a more structured form at the undergraduate level so that students can deal with the unstructured problems they’re going to encounter in research and in the workforce,” Pearson says.

He’s begun emphasizing this idea to his students. “You have to make a decision as a student that the process of learning is worth putting aside [generative AI] initially,” he says.

Yes you are correct but some scholars in the United States in the late 1980s tried to reclaim the word from its derogatory usage See the discussion by Willis and Rickman in the seminal 1988 academic work Die Hard... and yippie-ki-yay etc etc

As someone who was a chem major at USNA with a great, entirely civilian, department- to have this- THIS- done on top of all the other damage to Academies in general. No senior officer who ‘followed orders’ to allow all this should have any career or pension, hell they should lose citizenship.

Is it a skill that all our graduates need? Is it more important than other skills? Where does it rank in the definitive list of chem skills? These I think are debatable questions

I can't remember if we used bunsen burners in my intro chem lab, but I definitely had to be retaught it grad school (where I also learned to use a butane torch, which I much preferred)

Will they see flames again in organic? (Do we want them seeing flames with organic solvents?) How many students are we talking about in the lab? Can we get good one-on-one instruction?
120
Andre the Chemist @andrechemist.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Do I think teaching flame techniques are important? As an inorganic chemist who flame dried a lot of glassware and sealed tubes and capillaries of course I do! But when to teach it to make learning effective is a tough choice. Is one lab in intro chem enough?
110
Andre the Chemist @andrechemist.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Do we choose the classic experiments and methods? Do we focus on modern techniques and instrumentation? Do we teach data analysis? These are tough choices as we try to prepare our students for the next steps and things get cut out occasionally
120
Andre the Chemist @andrechemist.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
There's a lot to teach in chemistry classes, and even more to teach in chemistry labs (buy a lab instructor a coffee sometime and ask them what they are tasked to cover) Some things we cut out is not because it wouldn't be good for students to know, but because we just don't have infinite time...

Do you still light a bunsen burner with a striker these days, or can you just use one of those long grill lighters?
120
Andre the Chemist @andrechemist.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I don't remember *how* to light a bunsen burner at this stage in my career I'm scared of fire and I don't want to have to use it, let alone have my students use it
