Statement from Connor Bildfell, president of the Canadian Bar Association's B.C. branch, on personal attacks on judges following last week's ruling re: the Drug User Liberation Front
Some recent media commentary on the Supreme Court of British Columbia’s decision in R. v. Kalicum has moved beyond criticism of the decision to attacks on the character and fitness of the judge who made it.

Court decisions can and should be subject to careful scrutiny and vigorous debate. People who disagree with a decision may speak out and challenge its reasoning, and our justice system gives parties an appeal process for challenging decisions where appropriate.

But attacking a judge’s character or fitness—even calling for their removal—goes too far. These kinds of personal attacks risk eroding public confidence in our justice system and collapsing the important distinction between criticizing a decision and attacking the judge who made it. Judges speak only through their decisions and are unable to respond publicly to such personal attacks, making them particularly inappropriate.

Judges must make their decisions based on the law and the evidence before them, after lawyers present arguments to them. While a healthy debate about the merits of those judicial decisions promotes democracy and the rule of law, personal attacks do not.

NEW: OneBC statement on why Brent Chapman, elected as a Conservative in 2024 and quit to join OneBC as South Surrey candidate last year, is absent from the final candidates list
After long deliberation between both parties we have mutually decided that Brent Chapman will not run in Surrey South during this election.
OneBC was very excited to have Brent join the team, but the strain of the last few months has been enormous. As you are aware, Brent and his wife, Kerry-Lynne Findlay, ran a massively successful leadership campaign for the BC Conservatives based on strong conservative values.
Unfortunately, strong conservative values are not acceptable to the self-appointed leaders of the CBC, and Brent and KLF were subjected to a torrent of threats and abuse from insiders.
Politics is important, but so is family and security. That is why we are grateful for his principled stance, but also in full support of his decision to step back at this time and wish him all the best.

NDP leader David Eby’s campaign pledge today to increase income taxes on highest earners in B.C and Green leader Emily Lowan’s response
On the campaign trail Sunday, Mr. Eby announced a plan to raise income taxes on B.C.’s highest earners to fund health care improvements and measures aimed at lowering costs for British Columbians. The plan, which would start in the 2027 tax year, would increase rates on the top two tax brackets by 2 percentage points and introduce a new 24.5-per-cent bracket for income of more than $1-million, generating up to $1-billion in 2028-29, Mr. Eby said.
The changes would affect the top 4 per cent of earners in B.C. and apply only to income earned over each tax bracket threshold. Those earning $190,000 or less would see no change. “After years of freezing childcare, cancelling affordable housing, and sending workers to the picket line, Premier Eby has suddenly discovered that the wealthiest should pitch in to fund the services we all need. But by taxing income, Premier Eby is missing the point. The ultra-wealthy don't get rich on pay cheques. Their fortunes grow in stocks and real estate, and his plan doesn't touch a cent of that. Tomorrow, the BC Greens will announce a plan to fix that.”

OneBC has 33 candidates, not 38, in final list posted today. Below, OneBC post and Elections BC response. Also still awaiting party’s statement on what happened with Brent Chapman, no longer OneBC candidate in Surrey South
OneBC is proud to announce that, despite the very tight timeline to register candidates for the BC provincial election, we were able to get at least 38 OneBC candidates on the ballot, with several more still pending review by Elections BC due to technical problems outside of our control.
Stay tuned for more information about our local campaigns and our fantastic grassroots candidates!Hi again Andrea,

The final list of candidates we have posted is the complete list for the 2026 provincial general election.

As the candidate nomination deadline has passed, there will be no new candidates or party endorsements added to ballots.
Under the Election Act, the close of nominations marks the end of the period for political parties to submit their candidate endorsements.

Sincerely,

EBC Communications

Hoo boy. A deep dive on the cross-border effort to sway Alberta’s secession vote, from @carrietait.bsky.social, Nathan VanderKlippe and Grant Robertson www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...
A Globe and Mail investigation has found that Republican political operatives were on the ground in Alberta this year to assist the separatist campaign in its bid to leave Canada, while harbouring their own aspirations for the province to secede.

The Globe also found that when Alberta separatist leaders went to Washington to meet with the U.S. State Department, they offered up key assets from the province’s resource portfolio, including access to fresh water and royalties on crude oil, in exchange for help transitioning to independence.

Through interviews with The Globe on both sides of the border, people involved in politics, the corporate sector and Alberta’s pursuit of separatism have described persistent efforts by figures in the U.S. administration and conservative political establishment to support groups seeking American expansionism and independence for Alberta.

Fun facts: 🔥Since 2007, BC’s climate pollution has decreased by 2.3 million tonnes. 🔥Approved LNG export projects will increase BC’s climate pollution by 21.2 million tonnes by 2035. 🔥This is ten times more pollution than we’ve managed to cut in nearly 20 years.
Trends in BC's greenhouse gas pollution from 1990 to 2023, with two projected futures. Approved LNG projects will increase BC's emissions by 21.2 million tonnes. If we meet BC's climate targets emissions will decrease by 80%. From 2007 to 2023 BC has only reduced 2 million tonnes of climate pollution.
