It's wild to think that the next time folks fly into or out of BUR, some of them will be shocked to enter an entirely new terminal

ICE and other feds have been seen staging in the Target parking lot in Alhambra, CA, more than a few times since the surge began in the LA area in June 2025. Interesting to see this happening in NYC too.

We’ve been running the AC all summer, wayyy more than we’ve needed to in the 5 years we’ve lived in this place, and the electric bill has been GHASTLY. Don’t really feel like we have a choice, it’s been so hot! So, same problem, different season 😩

Holy shit. Queens win the WPBL's inaugural championship on a CGSO from Ayami Sato -- marking the league's first complete game and first shutout.

Yeah, it’s not great! My hope in reporting this is to get folks to move past “omfg make these mosquitoes stop” to understand why they’re here and what’s being done to at least reduce their impact

Andrea Gutierrez @andreagtrrz.bsky.social · 18/09/2026

This story literally came out of the editorial team being like, wtf is up with all these mosquitoes? Am I imagining things?? And voilà, a story was born

I wrote about mosquitoes in LA. And lest you wanna laugh and tell me you have way more mosquitoes where you live, how 'bout you click the link and learn a thing or two about why it's an issue. lapublicpress.org/2026/09/la-w...

KNBC just confirmed live on air that it was in fact their chopper that crashed in Chatsworth tonight. They immediately switched to regular programming to give everyone a chance to collect themselves. It’s been heartbreaking watching them report on this for the last two hours, expecting the worst.

They also automagically mail out ballots weeks in advance. And if you mess up, you can still go into a regular polling place IRL on Election Day, and maybe in limited locations for days or weeks before it (though you gotta give them your spoiled ballot so they can discard). Makes voting so easy!

Andrea Gutierrez @andreagtrrz.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

It’s quite literally that! Here’s a box outside a public library in LA in 2021.

Ballot drop box on a sidewalk in Los Angeles. Resembles a USPS mailbox, though larger and more squared off. Above the slot it reads:
OFFICIAL BALLOT DROP BOX.” On the front of the box bellow the slot it says, “TAMPERING WITH THIS BALLOT BOX IS A FELONY.
(CA ELECTIONS CODE 18500)
If this box is full, damaged, or if you have any questions, please contact us at 1-800-815-2666, Option 2.
NO POSTAGE NECESSARY
THIS BALLOT BOX WILL CLOSE AT 8:00PM
ON ELECTION DAY.
No ballots will be accepted after 8:00pm on Election Day, unless there are voters in line or the time for the closing of the polls has been extended by a court order.

Pack it all in, folks. Between this and the heat and humidity and eroding coastlines, no one in SoCal should have to work. It’s Labor Day part deux.

This will be an exceptional level of humid heat for coastal Southern CA, even relative to very humid periods earlier this summer. While high-quality long-term humidity records are hard to come by, this will likely bring some of the most miserably humid air on record to SoCal.

We may seem some genuinely extreme humidity levels along SoCal coastal plain Tue-Wed (yes, even worse than today). As Marie's tropical moisture lingers, temps of 90-100F will combine with dew points of 70F to nearly 80F (!), yielding heat index values as high as ~110F. #CAwx

Map showing predicted heat index values over SoCal on Wed from ECMWF model. They are widely above 100F, and locally as high as 110F.

I get it, you don’t need sliding pads with pants, but I *loved* wearing the pads and I preferred shorts to pants because I was often playing in the heat

Andrea Gutierrez @andreagtrrz.bsky.social · 29/08/2026

Hot takes: 1) softball never shoulda gotten rid of the shorts, and 2) if you can’t see the socks, the baseball pants are all wrong

WPBL just announced that Jemile Weeks will be replacing Keith Foulke as manager of the Boston Hunters. No reason was given & the league says they won’t be answering questions about it during tonight’s presser. This comes immediately after Boston’s first win of the season yesterday.

In the same vein as Struwwelpeter are the horrible little shits Max und Moritz, whose pranks, in the grand tradition of 19th-century German children’s stories, also earn them a grisly end

Wilhelm Busch’s illustration of Max und Moritz, two devious little shits who deserve what comes to them. Max has a full round face, stringy dark hair, and wears a blue jacket and orange top. Moritz has a pointy chin, pinched mouth, three weird single blond curls on the sides and top of his head, and wears a green top. Both are smiling, clearly thinking of violence.
