I’m so excited for people to read this incredible book, HEAD ABOVE WATER by Shahd Alahammari. I'm thrilled that this was my first acquisition at @FeministPress. It's an honest, vulnerable exploration of disability, community & moving through worlds that weren’t designed for Shahd.
A book with a black cover and a person's face surrounded by orange dots, reading Shahd Alshammari / Head Above Water: Reflections on Illness is held up by a white woman's hand beneath a pink sign reading The Feminist Press.

It has been a themed fashion week over here, celebrating selected albums by Elvis Costello for no reason other than he’s my favorite of all time ever and also I like clothes. Welcome to the working week.

My problem with the novel of the moment isn’t that all the characters are smug, cynical, and soulless. It is that the very stance of the novel itself is all those things. It excavates nothing, on a account of a sneering allergy to conviction and a deep skepticism of the possibility of sincerity.

Listen. Only about 20% of mothers have three or more children so even if all of those mothers have only daughters (very unlikely), that’s not enough to account for how many people are moaning about being eldest daughters.

Did a book event today and afterward a guy in the audience came up and said, “My name is Timothy. We had a French class together in 1998. I made you a mix tape and you called me a snob.” I said, “What was on the mix tape?” He said, “Kurt Weill. You said you were really more into RATT.”

It wasn't "cancel culture" when women and people of color got used up, silenced, and dismissed before their careers even began. It only became "cancel culture" when powerful abusers started having established careers momentarily inconvenienced by revelations of what they'd done.

Say what you will but Ryan Murphy sure has his finger on some kind of pulse. Gen Z loves neutral clothing like nobody’s business, so of course they’re eating up his love letter to CBK. At least he is showing them how good hard pants, actual shoes, and well-fitting shirts with buttons can look.

Is “birthday blindness” a thing? I can love love love a person (and show it) but hell if I know when their birthday is. It feels very important to some people. I also don’t care about my own birthday. Is this residue from my upbringing (birthdays: everyone’s got em. no one deserves a fuss) or what.
