Also, making models safer isn’t “slowing down”, it’s actually progress in and of itself. Why all this “emergency brake” nonsense when it’s something they should have been doing all along. Really just another attempt to abdicate responsibility for their failings here.

It’s a bizarre period we’re in where populist politics is heavily driven by a nostalgia for the past, but without willing to recognise any of the major lessons of the past.

They’re just increasingly commoditised technologies. These guys (it’s all guys) need to get over themselves and realise there’s more to life than a big IPO.

Reminds me of when there was a bit of traction around the idea that platforms shouldn’t let someone comment against an article until they’d read the whole article. Of course, now it’s all just vibes and people commenting in response to just those vibes.

I think there’s some fairly selective nostalgia-bait evident here. As others have posted, the no rules experience absolutely still exists and my own kids thoroughly enjoyed that experience in recent years. And I shared in that with them. Whilst *also* enjoying their adult skewing models.

“The rush to accuse, without anything approaching due diligence” A single sentence that concisely sums up a huge chunk of modern social media, politics, and “news” coverage. Also a foolproof heuristic for identifying people who can safely ignored or blocked.

Don’t worry, they got their profits for the week sorted by pre-emptively buying up Slovenian (.si) domain names to then sell on at a huge markup to companies wanting a version of their domain under the hilarious Super Intelligence branding. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Does an Old Man’s War sale often act as a gateway to the rest of your work, as it did for me? Or at least as a mechanism to boost sales in all the subsequent books in the series?

Some would quibble the genre classification, but I wonder if Michael Crichton would have a strong case for richest sf writer of all time? With posthumous income from Frank Herbert’s work/estate putting his work high up the list too perhaps.

This reminds me of the oil industry’s safety culture. I used to visit offices where trivial things like using the handrail were enforced. The point there was that you build safety-conscious habits in low-risk situations so they’re instinctive when the consequences really do matter offshore.

Sorry, perhaps poorly chosen wording, I should have said “appropriately secure”. As with most cybersecurity failures, these “escapes” were the result of good old fashioned governance and human failures, not some super-intelligence that could not be contained.

Also, given that we have precedent for holding companies, and even individual directors, directly liable for harms caused in civil and criminal court (see health & safety, environmental and financial regulation), perhaps it’s time to apply this to AI regulation too. I think we’d see rapid change.

Andy Cameron @andcam.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Without undermining the concern, or the capability of the models, I do wish the narrative would shift from “model escapes containment” to the more accurate “Anthropic/OpenAI fail to properly secure model testing”.

Andy Cameron @andcam.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
It feels like this is not so different from Health & Safety regulation, and perhaps even Environmental or Financial regulation, where the duty to prevent harm lies with the company, and with individual directors. Let’s see how behaviour changes if directors are criminally liable for a model’s harm.

Fair. But I do also think there are folks on the fervently pro-AI side who, in bad faith, conflate those who are rejecting specific uses with being completely anti-tech in general. So I’m not sure the constituency of those who fully reject is growing as quickly as one might think.

Andy Cameron @andcam.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
And a key thing here is not that people are rejecting the technology itself, or technological progress, they’re rejecting the specific *uses* that the technology is currently being exploited for, and the people that are exploiting it.

Much as the developing world bypassed traditional banking, going straight to a smartphone based financial infrastructure, they’re now able to do the same thing with energy by moving straight to local solar, bypassing centralised, hydrocarbon based energy delivery, somewhat leaving the West trailing.
