A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.

My photo shows a Minoan basket-shaped clay pot. It is yellow in colour with black hand-painted decoration depicting four bands of double-axes around the body of the vessel. The double axes consist of a central shaft with an axe head on either side of the shaft. The vessel is 19.8 cm tall with a circular base and straight sides which taper inwards with a carry handle on either side. Philip Betancourt, in his 2007 book ‘INTRODUCTION TO AEGEAN ART’, describes it as looking “like a modern shopping bag because its base is circular, but the top is compressed together as if it were made of soft material and the handles were pulled together to carry it”.

Double-axes were a popular decorative motif on Minoan religious objects. A hole in the base shows this pottery vessel was designed for use as a rhyton, a type of vessel for pouring offerings, probably during religious ceremonies. Dated Neopalatial period, 1500-1450 BC.

It was excavated in 1906 by Richard B. Seager from a small Minoan settlement on the islet of Pseira, off the coast of Crete. It was found in a hoard of fine pottery stored in Building BQ at the base of the so-called ‘Grand Staircase’ which leads from the harbour to the town.
