My favourite optimisation trick is to just hit 'break' in the debugger. It's more likely to stop where the program's spending more of its time. It seems like you should have to do it multiple times and gather stats or something, but so often it just goes straight to the heart of the matter.

I was very proud of the precise little jig I made to carefully glue a lens to a screen, right up until the heat of curing did this to the PLA.
A photo of a 3D printed tray with a cutout for (as it turns out) a small LCD screen. The tray is very warped. There is an arrow pointing at it, and the word "Don't", in the style of the earler datasheet image showing "Don't"s pointing at the screen itself.

This pops up every time Resolve updates. If I must install them, why are you giving me the option not to? And why is one of them unselected by default? And why does it seem to work just fine anyway?
A screenshot of a dialog box: "DaVinci Resolve Installer" "In order to install Resolve you must install these components:" then a list of components with checkboxes next to them, one of which isn't even ticked.

He plucked one out and said "like this?". I said yes, how much are they? "couple of bucks." We then looked at each other for a while until I realised he meant specifically that bulb, and exactly 2 dollars. Anyway, I paid him, it worked, everyone happy. I have no idea if he actually worked there.

I had an indicator die, went into the first garage I saw. Having looked up the bulb type on my phone, I found a guy and asked him if they had one. There was sample board on the wall - like a poster showing all the different types of bulbs, but with actual bulbs slotted into it instead of pictures.

I didn't change the length of the swing arm, so they were all at the same distance. And sure enough someone popped up confidently explaining that that's because the effect only works in a narrow distance range. No! It's because that's how hinges work!

The demo sequence involved a set of motions that was very carefully chosen. Vertical, horizontal, vertical and horizontal simultaneously, short and fast, very wide - anything that's not explicitly shown tends to be seen as a limitation of the device rather than of the camera work. But I missed one!

Looking again at them, I only came up with it late in the Vortex shoot so there are other things going on. In the solid state display it's very dark so it might as well be the display moving. In the fog projection it's a flat arc. Selectramatronics did a proper sweep at a jaunty angle though.

I'm not really sure why. Watching the footage I see all the wobbles and speed variation, but to a lot of people it's fakery. I did go with a paper thin depth of field which gives it all a bit of a dreamy look (otherwise the pixel grid of the LEDs was too dominant and made it look 2D)

I've been using this shamefully janky rig in basically every video since the first volumetric display. It pivots the camera around a single axis, and is a very cheap and simple way to get fluid orbiting shots. It never caused any comments before, but it's really doing so in the latest video.
A picture of a camera mounted on a rig, filming a cylindrical thingy on a table. The camera mount consists of a tripod under the table, with a haphazard collection of aluminium extrusion extending precariously out from the centre. The setup swivels around an arc with the camera remaining focused on the central axis.

(The holdup was that the repo originally contained the voxel models which weren't mine to distribute, and this is how long it takes me to delete one directory and add one line of instructions to a readme.)

In 1999/2000 I wrote a WWI aerial combat game along with a couple of colleagues, and called 'Hunt for the Red Baron'. I've always had a soft spot for it, and I've finally got a port of it that runs in the browser; have a look here: tim.aidley.com/projects/hun... Best played with mouse and keyboard

So much of the edit was spent grappling with crappy footage and trying to decide whether I should reshoot everything or simply disappear into the woods never to be seen again, so it's gratifying to see youtube comments saying the perfect camera work proves it's all fake.

Genuine thank you to anyone who has subscribed though. I never set out to have a youtube channel - it was just somewhere to archive my stuff. The more people turned up, the more I felt obliged to put some effort in to it.

The low resolution and low colour depth are the big drawbacks to this device - it takes a bit of care to set up scenes that work well within its limitations. I think the advantages of gaussian splats (high resolution, high complexity) would mostly be lost on it. I can give it a go though.

James Brown @ancient.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
And the camera has to move, because otherwise all you see on video is a 2D image of 48 lines and 2 bits per channel.

James Brown @ancient.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Global shutter doesn't help - it's the display itself building up the image line by line over the length of the exposure. If the camera is moving upwards while the display scan is progressing downwards, the lines end up bunched together in the captured image.

The usual apologies for resolution, colour depth, sync and so forth. But I tried raytracing a glass sphere to show the light field doing its thing.

It's using a similar principle, with a scanning drum around the outside. The big difference is that instead of a single light source per hole producing a 2D image, it has a whole 2D screen behind it, producing a 3D image.

I always complain about how hard it is to do justice to my 3D displays in 2D video, but this one really takes it to new levels. I think I've managed something here which gives a sense of what you see irl. The trick is to film it in potato vision - in high res 2D you only see the pixel grids.

I make this plot each year for our "intro to rocket science" course. It's remarkable that as many rockets go to orbit from New Zealand as from Russia – but on a per head basis we stand alone. This is an amazing place for a small country to find itself, and we should be making the most of it...
Two graphs, both showing the number of launches to orbit per country per year. New Zealand is 3rd= with Russia in terms of the absolute count, but way ahead in a per capita plot.

I knew that the horizontal resolution compensates for the low line resolution, but I hadn't appreciated just how much difference it makes. The reason this thing has 5 screens is that I thought 20 lines would be about enough for a single character, so 5 characters gave HH:MM and it would be a clock.

James Brown @ancient.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
(That's 8K per window, so 40K pixels across the 5 windows)

James Brown @ancient.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
At 8K / 24fps the pixel clock is about 4MHz. That's 1 bit per channel though, so the colour depth comes from dithering. I dither to 256 levels across the screen, so the true resolution and colour depth is some function of horizontal resolution, dither width and slit width.

James Brown @ancient.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
The software lets you choose your framerate and line width. The highest resolution I've tried is 8192 pixels horizontally; after that there's not enough memory for the frame buffer. It could go higher if it did some racing the beam type shenanigans, but that seemed like overkill.

I've nearly finished the build video for this thing. According to Wikipedia, "The term 4K is generic and refers to any resolution with a horizontal pixel count of approximately 4,000" which means this is literally a 4K mechanical TV. (It's also literally 20p, but that's not how marketing works).
A small plastic cylinder with a picture of a flower glowing on the front of it. It has prominent scanlines, but looks pretty decent all things considered.
