I'm struck by how the media, especially print media, sticks to enforced neutral language even as it is obviously being gamed by fascists. We need a wave of 1890s muckracker journalists. ::old timey radio voice:: Horrifying scenes in Minneapolis today as federal agents brutalize the citizenry!

This week on the blog: the big iconic opening battle scene from Gladiator (2000)! This sequence has become the image of the Roman army for many, which is unfortunate because - for as fun as it is - it doesn't work much at all like a Roman army. acoup.blog/2025/06/06/c...

I wish this were an April fools joke, but no. It is, unfortunately, facts. My car insurance company has failed to pay my mechanic and the car rental company from my recent claim and I’m left with a total of $3400 on my credit card that I should not be paying. I’m gonna cry.

"to democratize art is not every person having a cute drawing made in seconds, to democratize art is every person having time and health to learn and make art if they chose to, and mainly to have the means to think and relate introspectively with art."

we really need to stop saying “arrested” by ICE. the word you’re looking for is “kidnapped”.

The thing about calling The Lord of the Rings a trilogy is that it isn’t. It’s six books. Sure, it was published as a trilogy, but each book contains two volumes of the larger story, and each one is a complete narrative arc. This is why it sometimes wobbles when adapted to other contexts.

being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:

I do not want to live in a trade war. Like I prefer the trade war to a literal war. But I am tired and groceries are already too expensive. And we all know that even if the tariffs are removed, things won’t get cheaper. Loblaws will just get 25% more profit.

Fathoming the Darkness with John and Hank Green is actually a great podcast name. Truly a podcast for Our Time. I vote the when the podcast gets renamed in 2028 that we go with that name.

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

I had to purchase school supplies for my kid and I cannot tell you how much I hate school supply shopping at staples. Side effect of having had to work there during back to school season. Awful. I need a nap
