While hardcovers for only $1 are a thing of the past, there are still deals to be found at the Rockliffe Park Book Fair. This record is perennially topical.
On a blue grey background, Helen Reddy’s record I Am Woman. The artist’s and album’s names are printed in white in the left and right top corners respectively. The cover consists of a photo of a blonde woman with her short hair down staring unsmiling at the camera, perhaps with a hint of a smile. She has bangs. She wears a white or light coloured turtleneck sweater with a ribbed folded over collar. The background is variegated greenish. The back cover of Helen Reddy’s LP I Am Woman. White background with black text. The text reads as follows: WHERE IS MY FRIEND. AND I LOVE YOU SO I DIDN'T MEAN TO LOVE YOU. PEACEFUL HIT THE ROAD JACK. WHERE IS THE LOVE. I AM WOMAN. WHAT WOULD THEY SAY THIS MASQUERADE. THE LAST BLUES SONG. The above song titles are in a rectangle. Beneath it are the words yo the title song: I AM WOMAN.
I am woman, hear me roar in numbers too big to ignore,
and I know too much to go back to pretend
'cause I've heard it all before
and I've been down there on the floor, no one's ever gonna keep me down again.
Oh, yes, I am wise but it's wisdom born of pain.
Yes, I paid the price but look how much I gained.
If I have to I can do anything.
I am strong, I am invincible, I am woman.
You can bend but never break me
'cause it only serves to make me more determined to achieve my final goal.
And I come back even stronger not a novice any longer.
'cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul.
I am woman, watch me grow see me standing toe to toe
as I spread my lovin'
arms across the land.
But I'm still an embryo with a long, long way to go
until I make my brother understand.
Oh, woman! I am woman! I am woman!

We need good tradespeople, but we need good teachers, and music too! I’m also struck that the kid in the commercials talks about how great it is to know he’s helping his community by working on a seniors’ residence—he means a not-for-profit one, right? And one that is well run and not exploitative?

For a whole culture to change, men need to step up and speak out. Bullies rely on bystanders doing nothing, because intervening is made to be uncomfortable and doesn’t come with any glory. But doing the right thing shouldn’t be so hard if one respects others.

What the healthcare system fails to understand is that, apart from the incredible suffering caused to patients, lack of timely treatment ultimately increases the cost to the public system. Preventive care, or at least acute care is far better value for the public coffers than denying care is.

I wasn’t going to go to TD Place to cheer on Canada against the Red Roses in October, due to the cost of tickets, but also because I object to the venue’s greedy, ableist ban on water bottles (even empty ones to be filled up) and lack of fountains. But I’m definitely tempted now!

I don’t even know where to start with this: metrics matter, people are more than data, compiling lists of precarious people can be a slippery slope, children with good support can overcome poor odds, children with all the resources in the world can encounter unexpected hurdles, etc.

For me, it’s the opposite… because I started wearing a mask as a result of COVID-19! Before that, I’d get sick all the time—I shudder at the thought that in undergrad I’d spend 2h30+ on crowded trains and buses past three hospitals during flu season everyday without a mask. Horrifying!

When you mask, you’re helping yourself and others! Every bit of masking helps: you might feel comfortable going out to dinner and a concert without a mask, but please consider wearing it on the crowded bus home where vulnerable folks are stuck in close proximity to and from work, for example.

Hi, Ottawa drivers? When you stop at a stop sign—good for you,not everybody does!—you actually have to check whether there is also a pedestrian waiting for you to stop before they can cross, and then you have to let them cross, because they have the right of way. Stopping is not enough.

It’s great to read about people’s lived experience of illness. A lot of articles about dementia infantilize patients, even inadvertently, so it’s great to see those affected centred like this. And I learned something important: Alzheimer’s is more common in women and Black people.

I was watching CBC last night, and there was one of those “a message from the government of Canada” ads, all about renewable energy. Is this a deliberate attempt to mislead those Canadians who do not follow politics and policy, who perhaps missed Carney’s announcement about the pipeline?

I have always felt strongly that this should apply to academic writing too. If the point is to clearly communicate one’s research, then it should be done in such a way that it does not require a pen and paper to sort through it. No need to hide behind big words for the sake of it.
