Illustrated portrait of a Secretarybird, with its long neck with elegant gray soft plumes, bright red-orange facial skin, and long black feathers jutting like spikes from the back of its head which cast shadows on its shoulders. The background is a soft dusty brown-purple, suggesting a broad expansive grassland.

Sunrise over Arrakis Dune: Awakening
A screenshot of the video game Dune: Awakening, showing my character in a hood and stillsuit silhouetted on the left. In the sky on the left is a sliver of the large moon. To the right, the sun is just peeking over the horizon, giving the desert landscape below a beautiful orange-purple color. Centered in the sand is a large crater full of purple traces of the spice melange, the most valuable substance in the universe. Zooming in to the crater, nearly a dozen dragonfly-shaped ornithopters and sandcrawlers harvest the Spice while dipping up and down to avoid the sandworms.

Moonlight spice harvest Dune: Awakening
A waning quarter moon lighting up miles of desert sand. Centered is a crater partially filled with the purple spice melange, the most valuable substance in the universe. Six large dragonfly-shaped ornithopters and several smaller ones flit up and down to harvest the Spice while avoiding sandworms. Screenshot from the video game Dune: Awakening.

Spice Blow Dune: Awakening
A vent in the middle of a sand crater explodes upward with the purple spice melange, the most valuable substance in the universe. The foreground is a tan rock (the spire my character is perched on while observing this), and the sand dunes all around are lit by the harsh daylight. It is slightly dusty as the Coriolis storm begins to build.

Listen, this has been my favorite movie to have on in the background ever since it came out. The characters are all sincerely trying their best, the aesthetics hit just right, it's a great take on Frankenstein's monster, Dracula is delightful, and it's the closest thing I had to a Castlevania movie.

I enjoyed "The Verge: Reformation, Renaissance, and Forty Years that Shook the World" by Patrick Wyman. Especially as a read before playing the excellent Pentiment, as it takes place during that time.

Different scale, less flashy. Wizards cast fireball, but a thaumaturge stands in ritual circles and spends energy every day to keep works in motion. They might not be able to toast a burglar, but they could keep the pests out of the grain, and ultimately that's more important.

SUPER excited for this, after a year of chasing the angle, 30 minutes of waddling around up and down a parking garage, and over 6 hours of editing: A murder of crows flies towards the camera, in front of the full Moon, set to Blind Guardian's "Nightfall" and the sound of the crows themselves. 🪶 🐦‍⬛

It was probably 200 meters change in elevation over the course of an hour, not bad at all, and though it was rainy with good hiking boots nobody slipped. The path down went over some long slippery rocks though.

When you just feel like going a little deeper into the woods. Yakushima, Japan.
A wooden path with a rail on the mountainside. It's green all over and wet from the mornings rain. Thin trees along the path alternate between totally moss-covered and looking bare and barkless. One of the trees has a stepladder of mushrooms growing up its side. Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge, Yakushima, Japan.

It's really refreshing seeing shitey normal working class life depicted like this in a game, and a Silent Hill game no less. Pebble-dashed council flats, three-bar fires, Post Office counters, concrete shopping precincts. This must be how posh people felt playing Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.
