Part of the reason for the organised vilification of the Ardern govt initial response to the COVID pandemic was that it was so effective in demonstrating how powerful decisive state intervention in the interests of the common good could be. The far-right and its big business backers were HORRIFIED.

Nicky Hager’s latest book argues the tactics of New Zealand’s organised right have changed, but the interests behind them have not.

A pollster using “1000%” in protesting their credibility seems … unwise?

This is the correct way. Platforms who decide to curate should be responsible for the content on their curation. Else, do not curate.

It could show effectiveness of large donation fundraising, but not spending. Not yet, at least. We don’t know how much has been spent. Possibly a lot unspent considering there’s months to go until the election 🤷

Good article. Seems to me that most politicians think they’re actually the smartest around, and all parties claim to use evidence based blah blah. Gets us nowhere. If TOP get a chance to lay down some non-negotiables I hope they push cleaning up politics, and citizens assemblies.

Good on them. A criticism was raised, they see validity in it, and are taking a proposed change to membership. They‘ll keep improving if they keep listening, keep critiquing and making changes where they should.

Yeh - none (except their GM) are politicians. They may be politically naive, but you don’t get their polling by being stupid, either. Will be interesting to see how quickly they learn.

It’s definitely something they’re cognisant of. You’d expect them to prioritise policy that will support long term goals like tax reform. Eg limiting political party financing and transparency so all parties have a fair go, common sense controls around lobbying, and Citizen’s Voice / Assemblies.

Good on ya for asking Ben. You’ll notice a lot of criticisms of TOP in this thread are things people are ACTUALLY wanting from this election, which is why they’re getting traction. People are tired of the same old BS and want a break from 30+ years of fiddling by the usual suspects

#nzpol Just a reminder to people, there’s no such thing as strategic voting under MMP. Vote for the party you want with the party vote and they’ll get more seats in parliament.

Neolib nonsense has been around for over 30 years. TOP have already been around for around 10, with pretty much the same core policies. Yes, they want something, like all political movements, but it ain’t neoliberal trickle down bs. And yes - they’ll take votes from wherever they can.

Well said, and good on you. It’s crazy what passes as economic orthodoxy in MSM these days is often highly contested (or demonstrably wrong, depending on who you talk to). The job of the public broadcaster is to serve the interests of the NZ people.

I check Facebook 1-2x a month for family stuff. Turns out a few days ago my dad made a long post begging for understanding about trans people by his fellow boomers. Last paragraphs are below. Dad doesn’t always get it 100% right. He doesn’t need to. He loves and defends me; that’s all that matters
H. I have a trans daughter. She struggled to learn who she was.
She finally " got it" several years ago and has transitioned into a beautiful adult woman. I've seen the struggle up close. She has been mocked and beaten for being herself. I love her.
Personally I dont think I have the strength of character to do as she has, should I have been in that circumstance.
G. And finally..l just had to get this off my chest as I read, see and overhear uneducated, bigoted posts, stories, and conversation. Here's a testimony of a parent of a beautiful child..there are more of us than you know.
Hope this helps.
If I offends you..buh bye.
If you learned something..youre welcome.

I understand that a person may want to donate without others knowing their identity. They might upset a spouse or employer or fellow congregant and would prefer not to. But the ACTUAL donation pattern is so skewed that it’s distorting outcomes, which is the greater evil here. Its gotta go.

The parties don’t hide these - they don’t know who the donors are. Donors give the money to the EC who gives it to the party without disclosing who the donor is. Yep - crazy shit. TOP policy is for fully transparent donations, and limits to make the playing field fairer for all parties.

You wouldn’t trust Luxon to correctly tie his shoe laces. TOP say they’ll negotiate with the party with the largest vote first. They also said they’d happy to sit on the cross benches.

Erm. Nats ruled out working with Top. They didn’t say that for effect - they genuinely don’t see them as a coalition partner. Of course, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face, as the saying goes, but Nats are on the record.

Agree! Because they don’t believe the model of how an economy actually works. Instead, they believe it’s the same as a household budget. They drank the cool aid 30 years ago, and those structural changes have locked in a slow but gradual - and unescapable - decline ever since.

It’s a protest. People are fed the fuck up. They’re tired of Labour. Tired of Nats. Tired of NZF/Act. Tired of Greens. They’re tired of tinkering around the edges. It’s their vote and this time around they’re giving it to someone else entirely with hope that will move something.

The only mildly admirable thing this coalition has done has been to stick to their agreement, diabolical as it is. I give it a less than 10% chance of lasting though. NZF face a quick exit from political reality as Wynston ends a shameful career of doing not much with all his decades in office.
