1/ The world's songbirds sing in just 8 basic sounds. And where a bird lives decides which ones it uses. My first PhD paper is out now in @science.org (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aee6239) Here is what we found:

Our results indicate that sexually dimorphic plumage patterns may evolve through shared genetic pathways, followed by sex-specific lost of existing patterns. (6/7)

We also found no evidence that the extent of these patterns is linked to color ornamentation, camouflage, or courtship behavior. (5/7)

We found that barred and spotted patterns usually evolved together in both sexes. When males and females differed, this was most likely due to the lost of an existing pattern, only in one sex, rather than evolving a new one independently. (4/7)

We investigated how barred and spotted plumage patterns across estrildid finches evolve, to understand their functions, and how sexually dimorphic plumage arises (3/7)
