“From an unwillingness to confess how much her intimacy with Mr. Darcy had been overrated, Elizabeth had never yet answered Mrs. Gardiner's long letter—“ Elizabeth continues to feel so universal by, ironically, the granularity of her characterization.

“—and Elizabeth, agitated and confused, rather knew that she was happy, than felt herself to be so.” OOOOOHHH-kay at the risk of over-identifying with the heroine, this sentiment hit me like an errant dodgeball to the face.

“When I wrote that letter,” replied Darcy, “I believed myself perfectly calm and cool; but I am since convinced that it was written in a dreadful bitterness of spirit.” There are legions of guys on message boards and in people’s replies who need to have this hot-iron branded onto their asses.

I, too, want to be in a place in my life where I can decline to have a conversation if the vibes in the general environment are not to my taste. That’s a bit of a power move.

The letter ends with Mrs Gardiner remarking that she needs to stop writing and attend to her children, which I imagine feels more urgent after spending any amount of time trying to reason with Lydia

It is a little funny that when disaster strikes, Mr Bennet will be moved to action and Mrs Bennet becomes withdrawn, like a geomagnetic reversal of despair.

For all that it’s incredibly funny and silly and sweepingly romantic in parts, Pride and Prejudice is about a wolf in the pasture. I’m gonna be thinking about this forever.

This book is so complicated. I feel like I get a lot of cultural osmosis about it being a romance, and the romance is very memorable, but this whole thing is about a whole network of families navigating a Missing Stair abuser conundrum.

The fantasy, the dream, of a man who loves you well enough to try again, to adjust his own behavior, after taking the effort to imagine what might have broken your heart so as to cut him so deeply when he tried to grasp its jagged edges before 😭😭😭😭😭

My one observation is that I think this chapter hits SUPER hard because hardly anything happens in the preceding chapters, and EVERYTHING happens in this one. Austen accustoms you to one pace and then suddenly ramps it up, which imparts that breathless feeling. Austen is a damn genius.

Hot take, but I kinda think Mr Bennet sees himself in LYDIA, and that’s why he’s so resigned about his kid’s bad behavior!!! Sure he and Elizabeth love books and being snarky assholes, but Elizabeth is part of his ideal self, and Lydia is his indiscreet and impetuous youth.

Okay so I’m seeing a pattern here. Darcy intervened to stop the elopement of Georgiana and Wickham, so he stopped that disaster. Satisfied in knowing that was the right thing to do in that situation, he went and did it again with Bingley. He’s a hammer guy who found a hammer he really liked 😭😭😭

God, the party is finally over. The entire Bennet clan is just. The worst. I am not convinced Jane Austen likes any of these people, but she’s empathetic enough to write them to make us care.

God, Mr Collins being just achingly obsequious about some relative of Catherine de Bourgh is a lot. This man is always driving a dump truck full of cringe and backing it right up on the reader.

She has an unpleasant time dancing with Mr Collins, who spent a lot of time “apologizing instead of attending,” and if that isn’t the sharpest and basically perennial critique of human behavior ever, expressing a regret and never adjusting.

I wish I could remember who wrote this, to credit them properly, but a decade ago on The Bad App someone remarked that the common thread connecting toxic masculinity and toxic fandom is the mistaken belief that loving something means you own that thing, and our world makes me think about that daily.

Screenshot from Reddit page r/PetsWithButtons, user Pamlwell:
My cat has started to use “vacuum” as a curse word.
Basically the title. | gave him a “vacuum” button because the vacuum is stressful for him and I wanted to be able to clearly communicate that the
vacuum was going to happen and let him know “vacuum all done.” He definitely knows what it means because when the vacuum is running he
will push “vacuum” repeatedly and also add “nervous” in there too. But now he has started spamming vacuum after I tell him no, like he is using it as a curse word. For example, he will ask for “snackie” when we JUST got done with
snackie and I will say “snackie all done" and then he will go spam the vacuum button. Yeah, ok bud, I hear you loud and clear that you feel "vacuum" about “snackie all done.” Or he snuck a lick from the end of my spicy curry dish (I did not authorize this, | looked away for ONE second), I could tell he regretted this (spicy), and then he went and pressed “snackie vacuum.” Yeah, ok bud, that snackie made your mouth feel “vacuum”.
I don’t know what I'm asking really, just commiserating. I guess maybe he needs a "mad" button?

In 1582, a papal bull introduced the Gregorian calendar, still used today by most of the world. Because it’s 11 days ahead of the Julian calendar, countries introducing it simply skipped a third of October, and if you scroll back far enough in the iPhone calendar app you can see it change
