🌳Vote Preston Twin for tree of the year!🌳 It is a giant English Elm which has survived Dutch elm disease. It is also the only twin that is still standing. And it can be found in Brighton. www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-...

The event itself will be in Rottingdean. We will run a Rockpooling session, host talks from some amazing guest speakers and go on a bird walk. To top it all off, we will premiere my next film Counting May. (Plus we have snacks 🍪)

I have seen 50 species of moth, which is kind of a lot higher than I was expecting for this point in the year. I've been to way more moth trapping events than I was ever expecting!

Dewick's Plusia makes my list to 414/1000 for the year. The deficit is at 104, so I am very quickly narrowing the gap, mostly through plants and moths!

Half way through 2026! I am at 370 species out of 1,000, meaning that my deficit is still in the 130ish ballpark.

We have been growing a meadow instead of a front lawn for the last few years. Its only a small 30m^2 patch, but it hasn't been unnoticed by the local wildlife.

Having goldfinches eating the seeds of yellow rattle in the meadow outside my window is a magical experience. What's better is I'm in suburbia - not deep in the countryside.

I am at 276 species so far this year! I am 135 behind target, which is a lot, but there are still some massive groups that I have barely scratched the surface of. I did my first plant-focused day, and I got lots of new stuff! @sussexwildlife.bsky.social

Hot? Our wildlife is feeling it too! 🥵 Here are four ways to help your garden visitors stay cool this summer. 👇
A colourful graphic titled 'Help wildlife beat the heat' with illustrations and tips on creating natural habitats. Tips include letting grass grow long to provide cool refuge for insects, planting shrubs for shade, setting up shallow water stations for hydration, and creating muddy puddles to help nesting birds, amphibians and reptiles. The scene depicted shows a garden for wildlife, with long grass, pools of water, trailing plants and a muddy puddle set against a fence. The sun is pictured in the top right in orange hues.

Bringing UNO no mercy on a filming trip to a remote island. What could possibly go wrong? Sounds like the start of a murder mystery. Four people go onto a Scottish island, but only three leave. The victim has a plus 10 in their hand. What could have happened I wonder...

And yes, this does mean that I have now seen a Grass Snake this year. I am half way through the snake species that you can find in the UK. I've never seen a Smooth Snake, but it just sounds like a great excuse to go to Arne. I'm sure that I will find an excuse to go to London for the Aesculapian.

Just found out that the grass snake we get in the UK is no longer natrix natrix, but instead natrix helvetica. I am devastated, especially as the reclassification happened in 2017! I am almost a decade behind on my #grass-snake news!

What did you do in the Christmas to New Years gap? Well, I went to one of the most iconic places on the #Sussex coast, to film a dead dolphin! The film is now up on the @sussexwildlife.bsky.social YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB5l... It was a bit Gory, but was a lot of fun to film.

I am currently at 185 species out of 1000 for the year, which is good, but I am behind schedule by 78. The year is still long, and I am yet to get any dragonflies, or do moth trapping. I have been focusing on ground beetles which means lots of log flipping! #PSL @sussexwildlife.bsky.social

Smooth, Palmate and Great Crested Newts have made my total species seen this year sit at 147. I am currently slightly behind my target, but I am yet to tap into plants and insects. I've seen 86 bird species so far, and 21 different species of fungi.
