As the Dutch say, “de slingers moet je zelfs ophangen” (you have to put up the party decor yourself, as in: it’s up to you to make something out of it). So to combat demotivation and tiredness and the early morning, I’ve packed a book, tea, and snacks. Amsterdam, here we come!
The protesting academics’ survival kit: a thermos full of tea, a sandwich, chocolate and pepernoten, a red square to symbolise that higher education is squarely in the red, a sci fi book (in this case, Artemis by Andy Weir).

Picking this up again after the break, since the vote in the upper chamber (where the coalition does not have a majority) is coming up: The right-wing Dutch gov is planning huge budget cuts to (higher) education. I'm posting a picture every (other) day from protests. #WoInActie #DoeHetNiet 🟥
A banner held up, already somewhat dirtied from previous protests, that says "Stop de Eppocalyps", which translates to "Stop the Eppocalypse", a play on words with the first name of the minister of education, Eppo Bruin, who is in charge of the disastrous budget cuts to (higher) education. In the background, half of a star of Maastricht and some Christmas lights on Plein 1992 are visible.A protester (barely in frame) holding up a sign (which is the focal point of the picture) which says "Iedereen heeft recht op onderwijs & vrede!" which translates to "Everyone has a right to education and peace!".

Today at Plein 1992 in Maastricht - named after the signing of the Maastricht Treaty which aimed at a "closer union among the people of Europe - we gathered to protest the budget cuts to education in the Netherlands planned by the right-wing government: #DoeHetNiet #WOinActie @woinactie.bsky.social
Photograph taken from behind a colleague wearing a red vest of union FNV holding up a sign with statements about the international classroom and diversity entailing critical thinking and innovation needing diversity. Blurred in front are more protesters holding up more signs. Protesters, more protesters, the blurred facade of Centre Ceramique - housing Maastricht's city library - and a sign that says "stop met het slopen van ons onderwijs" (stop wreaking our education)Attached to a tree, a sign asking "Who fears an educated population?". Around that tree, a number of protesters (photographed from the back).Protesters (shown from the back) and a sign held high that says "onderzoek = toekomst" (education = future).

I also want to share these two pictures of a student I met at the protests in The Hague at the Malieveld. The government is not only planning to cut the budget, but also sharply decrease the number of international students, befitting their general nationalist agenda.
A student holding up a white sign that says "international students enrich the NL & " at the protest against budget cuts to (higher) education in the Hague. The same student holding up the same sign, other side displayed, which reads "make the country colourful!" - while all the letters are simply outlined in black, "colourful" is outlined in black and filled with a veritable rainbow. The exclamation point is a red heart.

And here's proof that I was, in fact, protesting myself and not just taking pictures of everyone else's signs (although I'd argue that that's it's own form of furthering the protest's cause).
Me, myself and I, wearing a Maastricht University sweater in dark blue with a red square - symbol of the protests against budget cuts to higher education in the Netherlands and of WOinActie - standing in front of a mural symbolising the importance of free speech. Particularly poignant, seeing how the originally planned demonstrations in Utrecht were "de facto prohibited" due to safety concerns (aka "if you don't cancel, we'll prohibit"), curtailing academics' right to peaceful protest. I'm holding my camera in one hand and a sign saying "innovatie? probleemoplossend vermogen? heb je onderwijs voor nodig" in the other. And I've matched my lip stick to the red square.
