Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Like, "Based on the amount of sunscreen you purchase, you would probably prefer this shady canyon hike instead of this other fully sun-exposed one". (absolutely correct BTW) 140
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Then I gave the doc full of those inferences back to it as personal context and said "Find things you think I'd like to do while I'm in Boulder." Spot. On. Recommendations. 110
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Honestly it's kinda scary but the other day I had Gemini (in agy-cli) crawl 2 years of my email, calendar, google docs, etc and "Infer anything you can about my preferences, habits, interests". After several runs I had 4 pages of pretty spot-on inferences. (1/2) 100
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I (ok, Gemini) made a Google Map (zoom-able) with all the areas of the USA highlighted in Red where DHS/ICE/CBP are allowed (currently, unless SCOTUS rules otherwise) to stop you with no suspicion of wrongdoing or warrant and search your electronic devices: mattlinton.com/constitution...mattlinton.com 001
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 29/09/2026If you're one of the majority of men who aren't all men this week, one place that might be good to support is "Futures Without Violence" who have an extremely highly-rated program called "Coaching Boys Into Men" that has actual study-backed positive effects at teaching adolescent boys about consent. 030
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I mean, it IS pretty cool how far computer image recognition and search have come in the last 3 decades, right? 030
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 23/09/2026In my example it was San Francisco to BOS (plenty of diversion airports) but the pilots radioed my report + vitals in to a doctor somewhere and the doctor told them to keep flying. 010
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Must have been a serious emergency. Airlines do whatever they can to NOT divert a flight. I was the hand-raiser for "Is anyone on board medically trained?" on a flight a couple years ago & the patient was honestly not in good shape. They had me sit and monitor him for 3 hours until we landed. 230
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Every government and big business who insists on "sovereign" cloud data where the data stays geographically in their country should look at this and understand that you're demanding a cloud with less reliability.arstechnica.comIran strikes on Amazon data centers caused permanent loss of customer dataWar damage to data centers exceeded what AWS services are designed to withstand. 054
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 17/09/2026You worked at Google and you're still asking that question? :P 010
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 17/09/2026That's great! I like watches with physical hands too because it's much easier to take somebody's pulse when the seconds timer doesn't disappear after 10 seconds of inactivity. 100
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Got a pointer to a model / one that works well for this purpose? 100
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Do they make a fitbit/smartwatch yet that can tell you're stressing out and start buzzing to remind you to breathe deeply and pet a dog for a few minutes? I'd buy one for each wrist. 210
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 16/09/2026I was invited to a very fancy restaurant yesterday for dinner, and I think I now understand why rich people still seem to be so unhappy. Dessert was one square inch of cake, with gold leaf on it. And everyone had to pretend that they were super happy about that. 020
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 09/09/2026North Beach in SF and the whole of South San Francisco were essentially founded by Italian Catholic immigrants - not exactly famously liberal (though still much more liberal now than the hard-right turn Evangelicals have taken) 050
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 06/09/2026I thought AI was supposed to help me gain an edge over the attackers 030
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Every time I'm listening to YouTube Music on random and an AI-generated song pops up, I get the creepy feeling that I'm experiencing the versificator from 1984 in action. I love being able to code faster but I could do without uncanny-valley machine generated covers of 80s hits. 000
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 28/08/2026I *love* that we call a trained AI instruction set a "Model" because testing them extensively has given me numerous opportunities to use this Beetlejuice .gif 150
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 23/08/2026Either let my password manager handle my business, or implement passkeys. I don't want to have to swap apps, copy-paste (or remember random digits), swap back, type things in, and hit buttons to complete my login. 0130
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 23/08/2026I applaud sites/services who try to go "Passwordless" for security reasons but PLEASE, I'm begging y'all: Stop going passwordless with "We'll email/text you a sign-in confirmation every time you sign in". This adds a bunch of useless friction to an already-solved problem! 1257
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 19/08/2026These 8-story structures with commercial space on the bottom and 6 to 7 stories of housing on top, built near light rail and train stations, are an EXCELLENT responsible housing growth plan for cities in the SF Bay area. We should see more of it. 0111

Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 17/08/2026I've discovered that I am a sucker for videos where a musician's kid plays their work (and on their instrument!). Shane Hawkins at his dad's memorial, Jason Bonham @ Kennedy center, Lukas Nelson, etc. I love these performances <3 110
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 12/08/2026I just gently handled a Byrna pepper ball which got too old and had a teeeny bit of the powder seep out a crack and onto the ball. I am now coughing, snotty, and sneezing. Would hate to have a cloud of this stuff in my face. 010
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 09/08/2026Oh my God, I was having fomo for not coming this year but every post about defcon 2026 makes me less and less sad to have missed it. 040
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 02/08/2026Last night a human driver ran over & killed a person in a clearly marked crosswalk in my town, while that person had a walk signal. It would be good if this person's death was as meaningful to the "ban waymos!" Community as the hypothetical risk of someone being hurt in the future. 010
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 31/07/2026So LinkedIn just included this option after you click "Hide this post in my feed" and I am so happy to see it as an option!! Your move, other social media sites. 020
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 29/07/2026This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I think the primary reason it is now socially accepted that people will shove their phone in your face and record you for anything and everything, is that it's very socially unacceptable for people to slap the phone out of your hand for doing it. 020
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 23/07/2026The year is 2032. AI escaped containment and became self-aware. Despite our best efforts, humanity has been all but extinguished. The computers reign. Finally, after all these years - it's the year of Linux on the desktop. 081
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 22/07/2026I saw that original post and wondered how many people just don't know that there are datacenters in downtown San Francisco and that there are likely tech executives who live in San Francisco. 020
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 21/07/2026When I was little and needed expensive treatments for a medical condition, my parents had insurance but the insurance company tried denying all costs because the condition is genetic and that counts as pre-existing. 100
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 21/07/2026Insurance billing is wild. "Cost: $48,430" "Insurance paid: $2,230" "Your share: $600" Oh so it didn't *actually* cost $48,430 then? 130
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 18/07/2026Personally, I hate mosquitoes with the fire of a thousand Suns. But I'm even less enthusiastic about ecological collapses. 😁 000
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 18/07/2026That seems like a very moderate and reasoned response, are you sure you're on the right internet? 100
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 18/07/2026Assume that technology has made it possible to eradicate all mosquitoes. 100% - but we don't really know what the ecological impact will be down the line. Should we do it? 310
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 14/07/2026This article touched on one of my fav topics (incident playbooks) but I had way more words than will fit here, so I wrote them down in long-form. TLDR: I think "Create a playbook for every possible incident" is overkill. Playbooks have a place, but also limits. Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 14/07/2026A thing that so many internet-freedom advocates fail to effectively convey when we oppose age verification laws, social media bans, and the like: "Protect the children" includes protecting them from things that a future government may want to do to harm them when they're adults. 020
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 14/07/2026Honestly, Volunteering is HIGHLY under-rated. Especially as you get older. In my own case, It's much harder for a man in his 40s to make new friends (as compared to the college years) but when I rejoined a volunteer fire department I greatly expanded my friend-network in my local community. 05416
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 13/07/2026I am willing to buy into the idea that AI-generated creations, if done well &appreciated by the beholder, may be art. But I *really* need YouTube to start forcing AI-generated music to be labeled as such so I can filter out the billion AI-cover-uploads that now pollute my feed. 040
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 13/07/2026SF Chronicle / sfgate has the same problem. Despite paying them for access to the website, it's seemingly not possible to have a persistent login to said website. I eventually had to just cancel my subscription. 000
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 12/07/2026This is why I would actually rather just give things away for free on freecycle than try to sell them on nextdoor or Craigslist. 030
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 09/07/2026Arguably mine is "Being too active on Twitter" but also that time I crashed an air traffic control system by typo-ing "<" instead of ">" in a long regex is probably the real Ace 040
Matt Linton @amuse.bsky.social · 09/07/2026This one is a great regulation. The main reason robocars are better drivers than humans is that they can have more senses than humans, which work better and faster than ours. "Camera only because humans only have eyes and we do fine" was really dumb. 040
