In light of some magazines pulling scummy things on creators lately, I’m doing a little thread on short story rights. I don't want anybody getting taken advantage of. Also, if you're new, this stuff can be confusing!

Today, a long drive, the Three Sisters, and glow worm caves (which were sooooo cool) No pictures permitted inside the glow worm caves, but can I interest you in another eel?
The Three Sisters (though one has had a Time of it) with glorious waves and clouds all around it.A big eel snaking through murky water. The end of a boat at the mouth of a cave. The river under a tunnel of trees.

Thank you!! I could probably offer some tips for getting eel-bitten xD But no, definitely a wonderful experience so far. Helps to have family here, I think, but we're really seeing a lot!

*flops onto guest mattress and instantly recreates The Princess and the Pea, but it's my knee driving into a small, plastic pressure gauge that made its way between the blankets*
A small plastic pressure gauge from some kind of play kit. The sticker says the pressure is in the green, but the pain is in the red.

Sis: Did you wanna try my mince pie? Me: I got a mince pie! Sis: I thought Dad sneered that you probably wouldn't like it, so you got something else. Me: No, he sneered I wouldn't like it, and I ordered it anyway. And it's great. Me and Sis: 😎

Three playgrounds, my first mince pie, and a great view of Whanganui. My poor knees are Strugglin' after all the time with the kids, but I'll pull through.
A pastry case full of pies.A mince and cheese pie, sans one bite.A melting moment that I had osmosed some knowledge of from pop culture but didnt fully know what they were when I ordered it: short pastry and jam in the middle, covered in chocolate. Delish!Another landscape of Whanganui, ocean in the distance, river just ahead.

Yesterday we went to Wellington, and saw the zoo, the museum, and the cable car!
The cable car over a landscape of Wellington, looking out over the city and the water.A sunbear standing underneath a sign with a sunbear head.Moa skeletons and projected shadows that are actually animated.

Today was a nice chill do-nothing day, which meant: - wandering Whanganui shops (and spotting a top-hatted man who is apparently a local fixture) - painting rocks to add to the rock snake around the lake - feeding SO SO many ducks, black swans, pukekos, and more

The eggshell is small, and delicate, and I'm glad I didn't plunge the knife any deeper. I carefully peel the fruit away from the egg, flecks of shell coming away with the fruit flesh as the chick within peeps softly. When I'm done, it pecks at the fruit that sheltered it, taking it's first meal.

Mostly I regret that I have seen just enough survival media to be half-remembering factoids like "do these eels have the kind of bite that floods their prey with bacteria or" They also apparently take down pigeons.

Me, to 5 Year-Old Nephew: I'm fine, buddy! The eel didn't mean to hurt me. We just scared each other. All good! Me, turning to my older sister and parents when Nephew is not present: Am I gonna die. Does this look infected to you. We can ask for disinfectant at the museum, right? Good. :S

Today was also Day 2 after the eel bite. Seems to be fine. I do Not Recommend it. And you may be wondering--"Allison, how could you simply not see an additional eel in proximity to your digits?" Well, I think the eel in the lower right corner of this clip can demonstrate.

Climbed Taranaki today... Or at least as much as you can climb with a stroller and three kids under five in the party. I can only say how gorgeous everything is so many times, but--GORGEOUS.

Also got to see more Beach, a great museum, and New Zealand frybread courtesy of Sis's coworker. SO good.
Golden brown frybread, fluffy in the middle. Perfect.Sugarloaf island in the distance, blue blue water, rocky beach. All of it gorgeous.More gorgeous blue water framed by tree branches and park walkway railings. Whitecaps roll picturesquely in the distance, and stiller water nestles among stones in the foreground.A moa skeleton towers, facing away from the camera.

Sis's Friend: Yeah, and New Plymouth has these eels so used to being fed that you can touch 'em. A friend did get nipped, but it's cool. Me, later: *petting one with index finger, forgetting to tuck my thumb in* Wow, so slimy. The Eel Behind the Eel I Was Petting: Wow, what a lovely bit of sausage
A whole mess of eels gathered together in the shade of a little river in the middle of the city. Some of them are very large. All of them are a little toothy. Brown and eel-y.A band-aid wrapped around my thumb, the thumbnail scratched up from eel-teeth.

This may be my favorite picture I have Ever taken.
The same stairstep mountains as the last picture in previous post, but at a different angle. Less green on the mountains visible, but the afternoon sun shines heart-breakingly beautiful on the water across the sand. One of my nephews in a hoodie runs in silhouette, no visible features, right at the edge of the water. A trail of footprints rounds black rocks in the foreground.

Loooooved the beach, where the magnetic black sand sparkles in ways pictures can't capture, and the water was cold but Gorgeous. One of my favorite beaches I've ever been on. "And this is just ONE beach," the residents kept pointing out.
Gorgeous little beach with a kind of river(?) passing through the foreground. Mountain cliffs frame the beach. The sky is so so blue and the clouds are perfect and it's all Beautiful.BEACH. waves. Foam. Whitecap after whitecap rolling in, sneaking up on your ankles.Mountains like stairsteps down to the water, a mist in the air. Could be B-roll in Jurassic Park. Love it so much.

New Zealand continues to be Gorgeous. Brekkie and a walk with sister and some of her local friends. Lots of time with the kids, living the auntie life I have so Missed. Went to the beach to walk about and driving back, passed through botanical gardens and stopped to see the mountains.
Ruapehu, a white mountain, visible on the horizon, past green green fields and forests.Iight shining through the trees, a fabulous bush I don't know the name of has fronds spreading out like sea urchin spines.Green Teletubby-like hills amazingly picturesque even captured through a car window.

Allison Mulder @amulderwrites.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Most of yesterday was staring out a car window, but we were driving along right as all the cows headed home, in big long lines across the hills, and occasional tunnels beneath the road. We passed one field where some kiwi farmer had his daughter in his lap as he drove the tractor.
New Zealand landscape, green hills with a tiny fence in the corner of the foreground, few cows sitting the area, And bigger hills and mountains(?) on the horizon. Anything is a mountain when you come from places as flat as I do.Picture through a car window capturing a hill covered in Jurassic Park-ish fronds I wish I knew the proper name of. Trees grow at the top of the hill, seemingly on a diagonal, as the sun shines between their slender trunks.A bigger proper mountain nearly disappears at the top in rain clouds and mist. A long, loose line of cows cross the horizon on the other side of a flat, green field.

New Zealand impressions so far: - driving through farm land more familiar than expected, apart from Jurassic Park plants and Elevation and the grass literally being greener and more gorgeous and hilly than anything back in the Midwest - S H E E P - Nephews and Niece still the cutest in the world

Discoverability for new SFF books seems way down these days, especially outside of bestsellers and certain subgenres. I'm noticing this as both a reader and a writer. Great stuff is in danger of sinking without a trace. Please post about new/recent books you love or are excited for!!! I'll start:

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, holding a red ball labeled "A SILLY MEME".
The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.
