Researchers discovered SARS-CoV-2 uses two regions of its spike protein that work together like “keys” to enter human cells. One makes initial contact with the cell membrane, while the other penetrates deeper to trigger fusion. The discovery could help identify new ways to block infection.

Harshi Peiris, Ph.D. A gut bacterium is showing up — or rather disappearing — across all three phases of COVID-19. 🦠Severely ill patients have less of it. 🦠Recovered patients get it back. 🦠Long COVID patients don't. Its name is Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. And what it does explains a lot. 👇

🧵"What we know (and don't) about Covid-19's effect on the immune system." 1. Lasting impact 2. This looks like... 3. 5-20% Source: ozsage.org/useful/yale-...
An image with a dark blue background featuring text and graphic elements.
In the top right corner, there are illustrations of stylized, pink, disc-shaped red blood cells. In the bottom left corner, there are illustrations of pink, spherical virus particles with prominent spikes, representing the coronavirus.
The main text is cantered and written in white capital letters, except for one line in parentheses. The text reads:
"WHAT WE KNOW
(AND DON'T) ABOUT
COVID-19'S
EFFECT
ON THE
IMMUNE SYSTEM"
At the very bottom centre, smaller white text reads: "Yale SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH".
An educational graphic with a dark blue background and text.
At the top left, a bold white header reads "LASTING IMPACT" inside a dark blue rectangular badge. Below it is a large red warning triangle with a white exclamation mark.
On the left, an illustration shows a person with long black hair and a green shirt. They are coughing into their fist, looking unwell with a pained expression and a sweat drop on their face.
To the right, white paragraph text reads: "Growing research shows infection with SARS-CoV-2 can create lasting differences in some people’s immune systems." The words "lasting differences" are highlighted inside a solid red rectangular block.
At the very bottom, small white text credits the "Yale SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH" and notes "Sources: CDC, Memorial Sloan Kettering Library".
An educational infographic with a dark blue background and text [Image Sent].
At the top, a bold white header inside a rounded navy box reads "THIS LOOKS LIKE...".
Below the header is a vertical list numbered 1 through 4 inside light blue circles:
•	1: Altered immune system cells. The text notes severe cases can change parent stem cells to create more inflammatory immune cells.
•	2: Viral reservoirs and fragments. The text explains that lingering viral components in Long COVID patients can amplify inflammation.
•	3: Immune dysregulation and chronic inflammation. The text defines dysregulation as some cells overworking while others are exhausted.
•	4: Triggered autoimmune conditions, blood clots, and latent viruses. The text states infections can trigger autoantibodies leading to disorders.
Stylized red blood cells appear in the bottom-left corner. At the bottom, small white text credits the "Yale SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH" along with several medical journal sources.
An educational infographic with a dark blue background and text [Image Sent].
At the top, a large white header reads "5-20%". Below it, white text explains that this percentage of people develop "lingering symptoms" (highlighted in red) or new conditions after infection, called "Long COVID." (in bold white).
A central paragraph states: "As of the CDC’s latest count in March 2024, 30% [highlighted in red] of all American adults who’ve had COVID have experienced Long COVID."
At the bottom, an illustration shows a person looking unwell in bed under a red blanket with a thermometer in their mouth and a cold compress on their forehead, holding a hot mug. To their left is a large, light blue alarm clock.
At the very bottom, small white text credits the "Yale SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH" and lists the sources as "WHO, CDC".

"Long COVID is not just about fatigue and brain fog. A new Ohio State University study finds it can quietly chip away at several senses at once, with measurable problems in smell, hearing and balance." Source: archive.md/JL1Ap
A news article from Hoodline with the headline: “Ohio State lab says long COVID is quietly wrecking smell, hearing and balance.” The byline reads “By Maya Collins,” and the article is dated April 1, 2026.

Below the headline is a large, high-resolution 3D illustration of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The virus appears as a spherical structure with a textured reddish-orange surface, covered in numerous spike proteins in shades of blue, teal, and purple. The spikes protrude outward unevenly, giving a rough, clustered appearance. The background is softly blurred with pale grey and pastel tones, and a second, smaller out-of-focus virus particle is visible in the distance to the right.

A small caption in the top corner of the image credits the source: “Fusion Medical Animation on Unsplash.” The overall layout is clean and modern, with the bold headline dominating the upper portion and the scientific illustration reinforcing the topic of long COVID’s neurological and sensory impacts.
