"It's making me dumber." At 404 Media's three-year anniversary, we got into how we report our stories. @emanuelmaiberg.bsky.social talks about how he was able to talk to developers at Google about how forced AI use was making them feel stupid. Watch now: www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_Vj...

the latest anthropic cry abt "cruelty" & "abuse" of ai is truly stupid. i beg journalists to stop parroting amodei we wrote why dehumanisation of ai is impossible & 6+ yrs later, everything in this paper holds Robot Rights? Let’s Talk about Human Welfare Instead dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1...
Yet we disagree robots should be treated as ‘slaves’. In defense
of her position, Bryson states: “But surely dehumanization is only
wrong when it’s applied to someone who really is human?” Our
position would be that ‘dehumanization’ is not so much wrong
for robots, it is impossible. One cannot dehumanize something
that wasn’t human to begin with. If one uses the term slave, one
implicitly assumes that the being one so names is the kind of being
can be ‘dehumanized’. One has already implicitly ‘humanized’ the
robot, before subsequently enslaving it. One should obviously not
enslave someone first taken to be human.

The one behind the IQ test that lets them further sort, categorize, and rank people in a way which allows them (or the state) to decide who or what is worth sharing resources with, including but not limited to: water, energy, education, citizenship, freedom, or life itself.

This is the thing that gets me the most. computer scientists in AI seemingly have no concept whatsoever of construct validity. What theory of intelligence, agency, or consciousness are even being operationalized when you make claims that these systems have them?

I think your coming from a good place, but these discussions are just meaningless without any kind of focus on power. At the end of the day these companies have the economic, cultural, legal, geopolitical power to make grand societal decisions for the rest of us and have been doing exactly that.

But we never voted for Anthropic? We didn't have some global election that said we all want to live under OpenAIs code of conduct. The code of conduct might work you and your community, but that data center being built without our consent is being used to surveil and kill people in mine.
120
Ambrose @ambrosia-engine.bsky.social · 2h
Keep in mind, competing with these companies is a nonstarter without billions of dollars to build the infrastructure and hire the people who are gonna tell us what our global community code of conduct is. Policymakers invest in and embed these products into pretty much every aspects of daily life.

Ambrose @ambrosia-engine.bsky.social · 2h
One thing you're definitely missing here is scale. If a community in the western hemisphere comes up with a community code of conduct, and a different community in the eastern hemisphere comes up with one, do you really think they would be exactly the same?

This is unsurprising because ai generated code *is* ai generated text. Code is text. People think code is different because you can test to see if it runs. But that just tells you if it runs (or passed the tests defined in the code) It does not and *cannot* tell you if it makes sense

I think this is actually the logic on why these companies don't use greedy decoding strategies to begin with. Increasing the "temperature" so they speak makes the product less likely to output the most likely token and this randomness makes the outputs appear more "creative" to the reader.

Anyways that's my two cents and sorry for the long text thread. I could talk for hours about this but it's also hard not to bore people with the technical aspects. And these problems are complex, but not impossible to address. The social problems underlying our digital nightmare are more worrisome.

Ambrose @ambrosia-engine.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Make it open-source so other communities can refine, modify, and iterate on those solutions so they fit their context and values. It's a win-win-win creates jobs, tackles enshittification, brings programmers attention back to the fact their work is meant to solve problems not create them.

There aren't any overnight fixes unfortunately, but there is plenty of low hanging fruit at least. I think Mandani's Pitt Crew policies are an excellent example of tool we can use here for us to claw back power from the tech oligarchs. Public funds for public code.

The internet has become an extractive and fragile monoculture. But we can revitalize it using lessons learned by ecologists.

Ambrose @ambrosia-engine.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
So the goal shouldn't be to get them all on one platform with infrastructure controlled by a handful of US tech companies. Rather have many platforms and solutions ideally with interoperability standards baked in operating more local and community level.
120
Ambrose @ambrosia-engine.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
However, I think this problem of scale is worse. There is no one size fits all solution for every community of people on the planet. We have different values, different contexts, different ways of knowing and being in the world. You can't have one community code of conduct for a billion people.

Ambrose @ambrosia-engine.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
So already we know if bluesky board and leadership start taking leads from Muskism we can switch to Blacksky or Eurosky without losing that social graph. Same with Fediverse apps. While these protocols don't fix or address all the problems with social media, they do largely address this fear.
220
Ambrose @ambrosia-engine.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
There are protocols folks made largely in response to that latter problem. ActivityPub which is what powers the social web (Mastodon, Ghost, Pixelfed) and AtProto which powers Bluesky, Eurosky etc. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse

Ambrose @ambrosia-engine.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Scale is the biggest problem. It is the value they optimize for because it might as well equate with profit. Having one platform for 10 billion users is the goal, and its an impractical one. The social graph is problem number 2. People won't leave largely because of that second problem.
110
Ambrose @ambrosia-engine.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Valid fear but the goal shouldn't be to get everyone on one platform. God, I feel so bad because I can't properly address this in one skeet. But I'll try my best to be succinct.

These platforms ultimately only exist and generate revenue because of their "users" and the data they extract from them. If regulators won't dare hold executives and developers accountable, we need to stop using their platforms. Talk to people offline about migrating to alternatives.

Ambrose @ambrosia-engine.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
This company should not exist and their needs to be accountability at every level not least of all their executives. We have laws and we have norms, this appears well beyond the pale of either. We need to be talking to folks and getting off of these platforms if regulators won't address this.

it's good to see this laid out clearly, but i'm once again going to point to Peter Naur's 1985 essay "Programming as Theory Building"
The present discussion is a contribution to the understanding of what programming is. It suggests that programming properly should be regarded as an activity by which the programmers form or achieve a certain kind of insight, a theory, of the matters at hand. This suggestion is in contrast to what appears to be a more common notion, that programming should be regarded as a production of a program and certain other texts.
