Happy Sunday everyone and welcome back to the #BirdsSeenIn2026 challenge, where participants share bird pictures taken this year to increase their country's tally! No that's the current leaderboard: no major changes in the top 40 but Wales again overtook Canada in the fight for the top 10!

Sadly unlikely, as they continue to burn forests in Indonesia for more weeks to come. No serious government action.

Our poor air quality this afternoon ~3pm. So tired of breathing this muck of toxic substances. It has been weeks & weeks. Wonder what the long term cancer risk is, especially for children.

Dark-necked Tailorbird (Orthotomus atrogularis). Such beautiful birds but not easy to image. Male & juvenile (possibly also a male). #BirdsSeenIn2026 #Ipoh #Perak #Malaysia #birds #nature #wildlife

Came across a pair of Raffles's Malkoha (Rhinortha chlorophaea) at the forest edge at eye level (I was in the car). They had stopped to preen & offered me delightful views. Such interesting faces. #BirdsSeenIn2026 #Ipoh #Perak #Malaysia #birds #nature #wildlife

Some have asked me where is a good site to see the Temminck's Sunbird (Aethopyga temminckii) in Peninsular Malaysia. Try the gardens of the Moonriver Lodge at Sigar Highlands. Also the Bamboo Woodpecker & 100s of acres of unexplored forest. See our report: malaysianbird.report/wp-content/u...

Switzerland’s iconic glaciers lost an enormous amount of ice in 2026, a new report shows, signaling an ongoing rapid meltdown driven by climate change that has astonished scientists. About 20 percent of glacial ice in Switzerland has vanished since 2021.

Switzerland’s glaciers are losing an astonishing amount of ice. See the meltdown.
Dry winters and a warming climate are taking a toll on centuries-old ice in the Alps, researchers say, with about 20 percent of Swiss glacial ice melting since 2021.

Was supporting a conference at #Sarawak & nipped out to see cave swiftlets. This was a bonus: Amorphophallus brachyphyllus - a foul-smelling carrion plant. Rare, tuberous geophyte, native to limestone in #Borneo Flower produces a smell of fried fish to attract carrion beetles & flies.

This is the leaderboard from the 41st to 144th places now. Compared to previous years, we are a bit further in term of species count, so don't hesitate to contribute to your country's 2026 bird list if you see it there! Still there was plenty of beautiful pictures sent to us this week again!!

Plume-toed Swiftlet (Collocalia affinis). Can be differentiate from Mossy-nest Swiftlets by undertail coverts - blackish with white fringing. They do not echolocate so I was surprised to find them deep in the cave. #BirdsSeenIn2026 #Sarawak #Malaysia @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social
