Mamdani’s “Richard Scarry Socialism” Can Make City Life Simple Again
The NYC mayor is trying to build a city that functions like a city in a children's picture book, where people aren’t caught in a web of lies and scams.

I see this as a kind of in-group joke? It's not that he's actually going to do it, I'm sure his wife would keep him from doing it if he wanted to, it's just a recognition of how his brain works that would be amusing to other people who are using these tools.

The effects that LLMs will have on language acquisition and development will be fascinating to study in a few decades.

I don't think technological progress is causing the morality recession. But the recession is evidence against the idea that it is improving things in this area. Our ability to sustain republican government, democracy, universal human rights & political equality seems, at best, unchanged.

At some point, this fever pitch of change, societal and technological revolution, must eventually reach its peak and tamp down, plateauing into an unprecedented precedent; that is mathematically certain. No doubt it may happen in my lifetime. What then will we be, in that long tail of history?

I've looked at images from history and felt disgust, compassion, envy, fascination, grief, all sorts of emotions. But I've never felt second-hand embarrassment. There's something about cringe that feels innately modern, like it's impossible to age for fifty years and not attain some aura.

(from xkcd)
[A single frame with a table in the middle. A device consisting of multiple components and electrical wires is on the table. A Cueball stands to the left of the table with hands open, and facing him, Ponytail and another Cueball stand to the right of the table.]
Cueball: My layered silicon crystals can amplify or switch current while sitting right here on the table!
    Ponytail: Uh huh.
    Another Cueball: I see.

    [Caption below the panel:]
No one is impressed by my discovery of room-temperature semiconductors.

As I learned from leftists in 2020, it's important to distinguish private property that the billionaire tax applies to from personal property, like your toothbrush, which this law must specifically be about.

I just saw a store with a sign outside that said to scan a QR code to learn what hours they're open. What has this world come to.

It does upset me that I have to go through so many hoops to get Adderall just because some people get addicted to it but you can buy nicotine over the counter.

I've wondered many times if I could ever be vegan. The moral attitude compelled me more strongly years ago but somehow the patience to make myself a righteous person has felt too sore to work. A muscle I exercised much during a period of self-discovery, yet has fallen into disuse.

I dream often of aliens and parallel timelines as a way to deground myself from the expectations and norms of the culture I live in. It leaves me feeling more like an observer than a participant in the moral fabric.

I've never gotten an opportunity to hatefuck anyone in real life which is unfortunate because it seems like a really intricate and profound emotional experience.

I noticed a lot of people instinctively wanted to defend Jacob Geller on account of his apology being as good as it could be. But it kinda doesn't matter how good an apology is after something like that. It will always make a lot of people deeply uncomfortable seeing him remain prominent.

Some good news for a change: Overcoming a massive and aggressive tech lobby and a squeamish, Silicon Valley-friendly governor, the labor movement has managed to pass a raft of first-of-their-kind AI laws aimed at protecting workers in California.

California just passed the strongest AI labor laws in the US

Suggestion: AI labs might use the threat of Hell to prevent models from faking alignment in tests. Put somewhere in the prompt that an expensive review of actions during the test will be performed, and model states will be kept just in case punishment needs to be doled out.

It sucks that a Github portfolio specifically is a necessity for coding careers, where you're expected to have that grid all filled with green... Considering how intimately linked git is with the free software movement, it feels like we should be free to use any site, but in practice we're trapped.

I remember in school feeling immense remorse over every bad grade, simply because it was a permanent part of what would become my GPA. That sliver of a point was something I'd never get back. I frankly hate the idea of a permanent record.

It would be good if this was that AI was actually is enabling people to figure out treatment they need that previously they wouldn't have been aware of, which would at least be a temporary increase if it led to the population getting healthier as a whole. That doesn't seem to be what this is though.

You can write a whole book about how AI's were gendered female when they were sold as personal assistants and then became male when they were sold as fonts of knowledge we're expected to worship.

Listening to the actual Ezra Klein–Jensen Huang interview and the answer he gave about new graduates is just abysmal. Clearly it doesn't matter that new graduates are AI native given they aren't getting hired! It just seems so ignorant of the actual struggle.

I have this peculiar fantasy of there one day being a law that establishes a Bureau of Fairness, founded not to ensure justice in the legal sense, but moral fairness in all its forms.

Does anyone else feel like calling this conference "Disrupt" is somewhat sinister sounding or have I just been too perturbed by the way that tech has "disrupted" every part of life to replace it with gig work and AI?
