Clancy's Rustic from the garden last night, Driffield, East Yorkshire. Still quite rare in Yorkshire and only very recently increasing records. First was in 2023 with 10 in 2024 and 17 in 2025. I guess there will be plenty more this year? @bcyorkshire.bsky.social @doublekidney.bsky.social #teammoth

Decent waders tend to be fairly scarce at Flamborough so today a brief Spotted Redshank and a Curlew Sandpiper that's been around for several days were nice to see @flamboroughbird.bsky.social

Oak Lutestring, one of ten that were attracted to light at a site in North Yorkshire VC62. Extremely rare here in Yorkshire although there seems to be a reasonable population at this one site. #teammoth @doublekidney.bsky.social @bcyorkshire.bsky.social

One of 29 Archer's Dart we recorded at Ganton Golf Club, Scarborough from Friday night. A cracking looking moth and rare in Yorkshire away from Spurn and this general area. The sandy heath habitat around the fairways favouring the species. @bcyorkshire.bsky.social #teammoth

It's not just about identification, the scarcities and rarities. I photographed this Small Elephant Hawk Moth @flamboroughbird.bsky.social the other day and realised you can see the frenulum & retinaculum quite clearly if you zoom in. Look it up - it's fascinating. #teammoth @bcyorkshire.bsky.social

This Fox is totally blind yet still manages to catch voles. A vixen @flamboroughbird.bsky.social a few days ago and clearly relies on her acute hearing and smell. Despite bumping into a few things and coming withing a few metres as I stood downwind, she clearly had a mental map of her surroundings.

A great 'Six Goose Day' @flamboroughbird.bsky.social with 14 Tundra Bean Goose, 52 Russian White-fronted Goose, 4 Pinkfeet, and a single Barnacle as well as the ubiquitous (and slightly annoying) Canadas and Greylags. Here are some of the Tundra Bean Geese doing a flypast.

With only a handful previously this winter, it was nice to see a reasonable flock of Russian White-fronted Geese yesterday @flamboroughbird.bsky.social when 34 appeared out of the gloom, alighted briefly and then headed south across the headland.

I seem to have a problem not photographing every Snow Bunting I see. There's just something about them constantly shuffling and bouncing along the ground feeding or a flurry in flight. A few have been very obliging for several days now along the cliff path @flamboroughbird.bsky.social

Is there anything as smart as a Firecrest? On a quiet day (autumn) for birds, a cool, windy south westerly and this is more than enough to brighten up the day @flamboroughbird.bsky.social today.

Andrew M Allport @amallport.bsky.social · 03/11/2025
Quite a bit of visible migration today @flamboroughbird.bsky.social Thrushes flying low in the strong south westerly wind with cloud, coming off the sea and making landfall. A flock of 11 Snipe and several Woodcock. A marvellous sight.
