I can confirm that this is a remarkably enjoyable night. We didn't know what to expect but followed a Mark Thomas recommendation. I'm not sure my brain managed to keep up with everything on the train monologue but regardless, we found it funny, fulfilling and insightful.

Humility is often mentioned as 𝘢𝘯 important quality in a therapist, but given its impact on the other virtues, it might be 𝘵𝘩𝘦 most important quality in a therapist.

Well CBT Blue Sky, it's finally happened, I'm teaching a new cohort of high intensity trainees that contains individuals too young to know who Columbo is. It's a sad day indeed. Thoughts and prayers. #onemorething

Wow, amazing stuff from the Red Roses in the rugby world cup. Something to be so proud of and an in-person attendance that is the second highest (both men & women) ever. Inspirational.

Best advice I never took was when I was 30 and on a massive career fast-track: You cannot cuddle with your career on a lonely night when your life is on the decline. Invest as much time on love and family. Sounded twee then. At 62 and near retirement, I now know it's 100% true.

A reminder that the acorn of this theory is with a hideous individual that made it all up, and was struck off the medical record. It was all utter BS. Had we found that immunisation caused autism, we'd actually understand a lot more about autism than we do now. And we'd welcome that knowledge.

Our paper attempts to describe a number of changes in our TTad service over the last few years including asking about autism at first contact, offering potential adaptations and training staff in how to do these..

Was reminded of Bentham’s argument that fear of crime can be a worse harm than crime itself. Everyone can be affected by fear of crime but relatively few people experience serious crime. And fear of crime can easily be manipulated for nefarious purposes.

6 years ago tomorrow, from the result of misjudged planning, I ended up traveling up to John O'groats alone on my birthday, ready for the start of an epic adventure. We started 2 days later and in 10 after we were in Lands End having raised £3500 for the Combat Stress charity. Best.Adventure.Ever.

There is nothing wrong with being a Freudian, a relationalist, an interpersonalist, a self psychologist, or whatever, as long as one does not succumb to the delusion that their school has a monopoly on truth and there is nothing to be learned from other approaches. - Arnold Richards

The idea for this paper came about after a chat with Dr Romana Farooq. The ideas apply equally to low & high intensity CBT & whilst paper is sprawling, we hope this first attempt resonates with some people & if so encourages reflection. Lots of conversations have fed into this paper - thanks below!

It was this or something similar that really introduced me to weird and subversive cinema (I think Channel 4 did similar). But it was the strange and weirdly interesting story telling that I took from it. Better to be confused for ten minutes than bored for ten seconds.

For the first time today I was asked to sign a book I co-authored. I completely get that when you are incredibly famous and it's a big task that it seems a similar big ask. But when you're a little author and the book wasn't designed to make money for anyone other than the publisher, it's lovely.

New research from MIT found that those who used ChatGPT can’t remember any of the content of their essays. Key takeaway: the product doesn’t suffer, but the process does. And when it comes to essays, the process *is* how they learn. arxiv.org/pdf/2506.088...

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? (Psychology) We know about all the charlatans and corrupt unqualified individuals offering support and pretending to be psychologists and therapists, and that they exploit people daily. But we can't do anything about it (currently).

06:55 - heading to the gym feeling groggy. Drove past a young chap walking along a small path that accompanies the country road. Headphones on, belting something out to himself, unfettered by surroundings, and wearing a smile a mile wide whilst doing so. That kinda joy is better than coffee.

Thank you readers for your kind words about #normallyweird uk.bookshop.org/p/books/norm...
I had to take my first pause at page 34, 1 am a 62 year old bloke who has never had a book make me cry in this way. It confronted me with my own mental health struggles, and how for the past 25 years I have blamed my depression and anxiety on what I now realise is probably the wrong "trigger".
This book doesnt preach, isnt new age woowoo, it just says. And what it says hit me like a sledgehammer to be honest, that someone could verbalise what my own life has been like so well was completely amazing.
If you are someone who this book is about (ie human) you need to read it.

I hate to be one of those 'confirmation bias' types but this is so reflected in clinical work, and simply makes more logical sense for treatment tolerability. Glad to see the evidence base growing.

I'm excited to get emails about possible NICE revision to the OCD treatment guidance (it's 20 years old). All exposure work (for every anxiety issue) is exposure and response/ritual prevention (ERP). Stop telling me that ERP is an adjunct to CBT. CBT for OCD without exposure is not CBT for OCD.

Treat your dogs well, they often do a lot of heavy lifting when you need them.
The picture is of a dog lying on the outside sofa on decking, with fields and greenery in the background. The dog looks very peaceful.

It's been a really challenging day working through @babcp course accreditation for the HI-CBT PGDip, which of course, it should be. There's nothing like a challenge though to bring people together for a common objective, and it's also been lovely sitting and laughing with my Keele Uni colleagues.
