The Times has published her fag packet numbers as if this is a credible and serious proposition… all paid for by cutting welfare and the civil service apparently… with money left over to pay off debt. As fucking if…
The Tories used Badenoch's speech to set out their plans to cut £7lbn from public spending by 2030. This included £36bn of welfare cuts and £6bn in reductions to Whitehall departmental spending. The party said this would pay for all the tax cuts and spending commitments made so far by Badenoch, as well as an extra £35.5bn that would go towards reducing the UK's debt pile.

Have they answered this question yet? Or are we to assume that it'll be paid for out of their magic money tree benefit cuts, which somehow serve to fund every other policy they announce.

This intensely stupid right wing idea is an extension of Brexit ignorance and prejudice. It represents the failure of our politics and our media to act in our best interests and to inform voters properly. Brexit is more than enough idiocy. Leaving the ECHR shouldn’t even be on the radar.

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

Thank goodness for the protection afforded to the British public by the Nolan Principles. What? Ohh!
The Seven Principles
• Selflessness: Act solely in the public interest rather than for personal financial gain or other benefits.
• Integrity: Avoid outside obligations that might improperly influence your work, declare any private interests, and do not gain financial benefits for family or friends.
• Objectivity: Make choices impartially, fairly, and on merit using the best available evidence.
• Accountability: Remain answerable to the public and submit to proper scrutiny for your actions and decisions.
• Openness: Act transparently and keep information public unless there are clear, lawful reasons to withhold it.
• Honesty: Be truthful and clear in all public dealings.
• Leadership: Exhibit respectful behavior, actively promote these ethical principles, and challenge poor conduct in others

Read the official guidance provided by the UK government on The Seven Principles of Public Life.

John Healey will, according to reports, head into the Budget with a £4bn to £6.5bn chunk of his fiscal headroom having mysteriously gone walkabouts. The cause? A sharp drop in immigration to the UK. Almost as though migrants aren’t all just wandering around devouring taxes for shits and giggles.

Net Migration if Falling - now the Treasury needs to Pay the Bill for it.
After years of promising that fewer migrants would relieve pressure on Britain, Labour is discovering that cutting migration also means cutting workers, taxpayers and economic headroom.
