Without this (and Shoestring, but that’s another story) I don’t think I’d have ended up living in Bristol and bringing up a family here. My latest proposal for #5debutalbumsfinal

Today I place at your mercy this beaut. Seemed to be in development hell for two years, so long that the amazing singles Just Like Gold and Mattress of Wire never made it. Even so, a debut that sounds like a greatest hits… A jewel in Lanarkshire’s crown #5debutalbumsFinal

Seldom has a band fallen from the sky with such a fully formed, distinctive and all round wonderful debut. Today’s #5debutalbumsFinal suggestion.

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - Rattlesnakes

May I propose for #5debutalbumsFinal this beauty. A bit overlooked as a bridge between JD and the ‘new’ NO sound, it’s a brilliant line up of songs tied together by a melancholy, post-industrial vibe. Though 45 years later I still can’t remember the names of the tracks…

My first pitch for #5debutalbumsfinal and probably where it all started for me. Fallen in love with parents’ Beatles, Simon & Garf, Planxty. watched the Sex Pistols etc rip it up. Then this. Still punky, but expansive, and smart, and beautiful. changed the way I thought about life, not just music.

They always seemed to be slightly behind the curve in the era of music weeklies’ micro-measurement of trends. But this is a magnificent record. They should have told Reg to keep his prog cover art in the bin🫤. #5debutalbumsSF3

Now seems universal and iconic. In 1979 it felt like the few people I knew who had this album had passed through a hidden door into a new form of beauty. #5debutalbumsSF3

This really did come from somewhere different. 1980 was teeming with great bands, but the Furs were stranger and cooler that the rest. Imitation of Christ and Blacks/Radio at the top of the list. #5debutalbumsSF3

I’m not the only one who can truly say that music changed my life. I was a nerdy wee boy, obsessed with sortable things like dinosaurs and coin collecting. During 1978 my obsession swivelled to music and this album, released 2 days before my 12th birthday, was at the heart of it. #5debutalbumssf3

The seeds of Sulk’s theatricality are planted, but in a more mainstream (though still wildly innovative) new wave soundscape. A single cheapo sesh somehow coughed up two works of genius in this and Seventeen Seconds #5debutalbumsSF3
