Translator stuff. Japan has a word for autumn leaf hunting, "momojigari" — deliberately going out to seek and admire the changing colors, like "hanami" for cherry blossoms in spring. In English we just "look at leaves," but Japan built an entire ritual around it. #Japan #Language #Translation

I once encountered a woman who actually typed like this, with a pen, because she had super long nails. Typed pretty fast, too. If anybody needs a visual quirk for a minor character, you're welcome

Man in North London: You're from Sweden? Woman: Yes. Man: How do you guys cope with the dark winters? Woman: Oh that's simple. We get depressed.

Does Santa Claus count? He was meeting & greeting kids, and I was told to touch his beard and burst into tears and said it was because he was surely cold, because I couldn't articulate, at age three, that it was clearly a 20-year-old guy with fake facial hair, and the adults DIDN'T NOTICE?!

Yeah, it appears to serve no other purpose, they simply get extra money out of more price-elastic customers without losing price-sensitive ones. They'll confirm you're there when you turn up at the counter to give them your suitcase

Price discrimination. Check in at the airport for 20 quid or online for free between 7 days & 24 hrs before ur flight, but if you don't care about the 20 you won't bother and if you do the airline will still get ur business. Or free at the airport, but online you can choose a seat for a fee etc.

I recently encountered a claim that the French do conjugate English verbs, but it's highly unusual to see them loaned at all (From Proto, an excellent book, v insightful, especially on prehistory)
"A modern analogy is the way that, to the horror of purists, French has imbibed the English verbs "to stop" (stopper) and "to crash" (se crasher) which it conjugates as it would any regular French verb. During the 2022 football World Cup, French commentators discussed how the objective of all the teams coming up against France was to stopper Mbappé, a reference to the star [...]"

I should try that, I love nuts 🤝 Though peanuts, I think, are technically peas? Anyway, switching from sugar to honey was the best thing I've ever done, food-wise. Super recommended

A shade of pink that designers would recognise as rose poudré. Its hex code is "deadaf"

That's a more forgiving area: less visible. Try adhesive tape, it may work depending on the texture, and it's faster than scissors

I'd go with manicure sciccors. You do hand-wash those items, yes? Hand-wash if at all possible, in cool water, with a liquid detergent or shampoo, and do it infrequently. Don't wring. Squeeze the water out, lay flat to dry. Once you get bobbles, wool won't really look pristine again, so prevent them

so he cuts in and says, in Eng, "competitors totally shit" or something like that. We're meant to be purely a conduit. Come to think of it, it doesn't matter if the source was using a persona. We do it either way: our persona is them. / end of illustration 😊

Nikki Vega @alphalyrae.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
Which is completely inappropriate in the circumstances, so I figure the profanity is not the point and say "Your competitors' products can't even remotely compare to this." But it turns out that for the C guy it is in fact the point. He speaks enough English to notice I didn't say "shit"

One guy's laptop is covered in stickers of Eric Cartman. If it wasn't, you still could tell that's his entire persona(lity?). The way he looks, dresses, talks, etc. The demo is over, they love the item, and the Cartman guy says "Compared to this, your competitors' products are total shit!"

That's the essence of what we do, wouldn't you say? We're not given a synopsis or key points or what have you and asked to flesh them out the way we see fit. We're supposed to say what the speaker/writer would say if they spoke our TL. Here's a recent illustration you might find relevant 👇

A large portion of what I do is high-end marketing + internal comms, which certainly involves personas (who are invariably deranged), but it's for the copywriters to use them. My job is to stick to their vibe. So, I guess, the answer is yes in the sense that all translation is acting.
