Minnesota is the fucking best and the Somali population here helps make it so. We stand up to dipshit demagogues trying to incite violence against our immigrant neighbors. You already FAFOed here once buddy

Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red is so weird and wrenching and funny and weird and tragic and imaginative and weird and utterly inimitable, and I often cite it as my favorite book of all time. So happy she’s getting recognition from my buddy Al Nobel

Vote YES on the school amendment, Minnesota! Skipping the question is the same as a No vote. Yes for school funding that doesn’t affect your tax dollars whatsoever!

Yup I love seeing yard signs as markers of which neighbors I want to be friends or foes with, but I don’t think they are a particularly effective persuasive force in higher level races where the names are well known. (They do more work downballot when I might not otherwise know who the person is)

There is so much amazing crop art this year at the Minnesota State Fair focused on the resistance to the ICE occupation we faced, this one in particular had me choked up.

Crop art with a whistle text says

just did a google takeout of everything I've ever had in Drive and now I'm reading through very old poetry and I'm not gonna lie I was onto something with this one

we smoke & have beers & pat
says: and what about that &
i say: god-damned if i know
but one thing & that's no
matter what we are
alive & happy/sad & isn't that
something & pat says: yeah
& then the sun goes down & it
gets cold & we go somewhere else

btw this project is [always] seeking musicians to collaborate and/or gig with, and has existed in many permutations from full band to indie rock duo to looping guitar+cello, no musical idea is unwelcome (unless it involves using LLMs)

Ways I have described my record in review requests
mortise+tenon is a record about the transient nature of ontological reality maybe, or not, and also love, loss, ghosts, volcanoes, hope as an insurrectionist act, etc
The record is 57 minutes of cosmic indie bedroom folk about
potential realities, parallel lives, connections across time and the boundaries between worlds, and what we bequeath to future generations. Aka love and loss and humanhood.
The songs are about change and
ontological crises and the agony of loss and the relentless cavalcade of days and honestly not much woodworking despite the title, which is more a metaphor of connection and strength and togetherness, which is also what the songs are about, too.

Feels like the appropriate occasion for a little poem. This one is called “freedom is an ersatz ring”

some in peace and some in war settle like a broken score
no matter that we're driven to distraction plug your ears and close your eyes nothing able to surprise negate all principles of ataraxia
freedom is a tangled vein you push you pull you poke and then
suddenly burst forth into the blind light where choice becomes an upturned bowl, gravity well, magnetic pole
like moth to flame you step into the limelight
take the stage and speak the lines nothing as if not by design forbidden words the only ones we've uttered stand for this and kneel for that waver often, take it back
leave truth knocked out lying in the gutter
freedom is a term of art stitch together rip apart whether freshly mended or asunder use it wisely or let go

18:12
•..
use it wisely or let go omniscient or never known
grab some for yourselves, deserved plunder
plucked out from the cosmic fog chosen or random, won't be long deposited in skin you never wished for then up and at 'em, study hard, chores and taxes work and bar
til love or something strikes you like a meteor
freedom is a turn of phrase like here tomorrow gone today
besotted with the choice though falsely given
so up the ante call the bluff, go all in it's not enough sifting for the coins beneath the cushion
set in motion still as stone all together each alone
regretting that it's far too late to stop now it's happening just out of frame reboot restart begin again

regretting that it's far too late to stop now it's happening just out of frame reboot restart begin again
let's take it back one more time from the top now
freedom is an ersatz ring a dazzling cheap coveted thing created to be wanted, but to fool you or maybe it's a tangled vein, have we come round to that again? so quickly off the mark, how it unspools you
