Last February, I led a proposal submission that encompassed six months, hundreds of hours, four institutions, a massive team, and and 256 pages. NSF just informed us that the entire Biology Integration Institute program was archived and our proposal would not even be reviewed. With a form email.
A screen shot of an email reading:

Dear Dr. Gill, Jacquelyn,

I am writing to let you know that given the current budgetary projections and recent adjustment of NSF’s over-arching priorities, NSF/BIO will not be making any new awards through the Biology Integration Institutes Program. Therefore, the solicitation has been archived, and NSF has returned your proposal without review so you can re-submit it, or portions of it, to appropriate BIO programs that currently are receiving new proposals, if you wish.

Sincerely,

Jim Deshler

It's frustrating how we are destroying our ability to move forward with science. I have a current grant in EDU, so I won't be affected by indirect cost changes till new applications, but I could definitely be affected by new terminations.

🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees: Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and… 1. Download your NSF award letters. 2. Print PDF your annual reports. 3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports. NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov
Due to maintenance, Research.gov (including access to NSF-PAR, GRFP, PES, and ETAP) will be unavailable from Fri., 4/25 at 10:00 PM ET to Sat., 4/26 at 1:00 PM ET. NSF apologizes for any inconvenience.

Happy year of the snake! I would argue that the snakes of the United States are just as varied and pretty as our birds. A few years ago I made a poster to try and prove it. Drawing this took many months and a lot of research. You can get it here: topatoco.com/collections/...
A poster called Snakes of the United States & Canada, featuring every species of snake found in these two countries, all arranged by relative size and taxonomy, all smiling.A close-up of the poster, with a variety of cute snakes, from watersnakes to hog-nosed snakes.
