in a week that saw microsoft give activision the reins to halo and bungie pivot back to destiny, one thing has become abundantly clear: the people in charge do not have a long-term, overriding plan. they’re just reacting. the result, when times are bad, is chaos
"Things are still very chaotic," a current id Software employee who was granted anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly told Aftermath. "While there has been an attempt to communicate to the studios, it is still entirely in bullshit corporate speak. I still don't believe they have a clear vision for the future. The only concrete thing they have communicated is they want higher profits, and they want it now. Aggressive goals are being set that would have been unrealistic even before the layoffs. ... To say the workers within Xbox have a dim view of the future is putting it mildly. We keep thinking morale can't sink lower but the obvious incompetence of Xbox management somehow keeps driving it down worse."
This mirrors shifts in strategy that have come to dominate the still-new Sharma era, including others outlined Tuesday. Rare is joining Activision, Turn 10 and Playground are fusing, and—most gallingly, considering their history—Obsidian is being folded into Bethesda to work on Fallout instead of its own original series. As with the previous round of layoffs, details betray Microsoft's haphazard approach: A Halo developer got promoted and laid off in the same week. Gears of War: E-Day's story director is out of a job days after celebrating that the game had gone gold. Hellblade developer Ninja Theory, now without a buyer after a brief glimmer of hope, is once again on the chopping block.
All of this betrays a simplistic mindset that does not accurately reflect the reality of game development: People are disposable, studios are interchangeable, and series can be traded like sports teams. Nothing matters more than franchises and their money-printing prowess. Unless, evidently, you are Hideo Kojima, in which case Microsoft suddenly has money to burn.

Tool exhaustion related to AI is something I'm experiencing and speaking to others they are too. There's so many different surfaces, tools, workflows. That then creates duplicate work to get set up and ends up with a fragmented experience across the different surfaces.

Really cool to see some of the work coming out around agent runtimes. The early consolidation around OpenAI's chat and completion API model was right then but there's a whole layer ("substrate" apparently) of common functionality that is now being abstracted.

Hackathon over the weekend on a new OSS project, working with friends at other companies. Hadn't realised how much I took `/yolo` plus sandboxed dev environments for granted. Clicking 'Allow' on every prompt in VSCode with yolo locked behind an admin setting. 😬

AI has made it difficult for teams to estimate "time to deliver" or sizing effort. When AI works, you can go lightning fast. But what I've seen is project scope creep like never before. Simple efforts become defining new frameworks and building net-new toolchains.

Charity is one of the most clear-thinking people on this question of human interaction and ‘slop’. I’ve been banging this drum at work and no one is listening, but I’ve got precious little patience for humans who ask a machine to convey their thoughts to me.

Picking the right tools can save literally years of development. The CNCF is such a treasure trove of incredible technology just sitting there waiting to be used, contributed to and shared. Teams sometimes don't realise how good we've got it when it comes to OSS

Slack has changed the behaviour of the ESC key. A decade of muscle memory is killing me every time I am using it. Officially over the hill, can't adjust to keyboard shortcut changes. Time to become an Vim user? 🤔

I've yet to dip into any of these agent platforms like OpenClaw yet. Definitely been curious about projects like Buzz and, to an extent, Grok Bot. But also, the Grok ick has touched this one. Makes me think it's worth waiting a few more months once these ideas have made it into other projects

Building a new product from scratch can be a real challenge at any time, now with AI it's even more challenging. When anything is possible, and you can brute force solutions with tokens, how do you help a team remain focused on seeking the real value and delivering on that.

While inner-source contributions can be messy or occasionally cause friction, it completely changes how teams approach work. This is even more true in the age of AI-authored contributions.

Been a few weeks with my SteamOS handheld. The nicest part is how low distraction it feels. Love the clean UI and focused experience on start up. The device feels like a tool in the best sense of that word. It's here to play games and get out the way. Similar to the Switch in that way.

I've found reading proposals and one-pagers difficult more recently as AI tells are harder to spot. I can't tell if the author is thorough and deep in the context of the problem or if they churned it through a model for 10 minutes. The only way to tell is get on a call and just test knowledge.

GPT-5.6 Terra has converted me. It's been a really great model for my use at work. Before I had been a Claude loyal but Terra has stayed on the rails and done good work when I needed it. I've also been leaning into "Auto-mode" in Copilot for many tasks. It's been way better than before.

First game on the Lenovo Legion Go has been Prey: Mooncrash. Wow, it is so close to Deathloop. Amazing to see the origins on that game. Deathloop is underappreciated, not perfect but interesting for sure. Even more so with Marathon now.

After much deliberation, I've finally ordered a handheld. I saw a good deal for the Lenovo Legion Go S: - has SteamOS, receives updates - slightly more powerful than Deck - more compact - was cheap In the end I think I was over-analysing a bunch. Just needs to play Steam games.

Of all Xbox's numerous gaffes over the past decade+, how they've handled Arkane Studios hurts the most. Produced a run of incredible games from Dishonoured through to Prey and Deathloop was a solid if not perfect entry Since then they haven't been able to thrive.

Heard the distinction between "agent-driven" and "agent-assisted" development and how different models can be better at each of these. Personally I've found recent Opus models running wild on their solutioning. Multiple rounds chewing through tokens to create workarounds to non-existent constraints

I feel this in my bones
Quote from Charity's post:

"Some technologies are more damaging than others — knives are less damaging than guns, Facebook for colleges was less damaging than Facebook for Myanmar — but we always discover risks before we know how to govern them.2 There is always a gap while we try to catch up.

That gap is not proof that AI is evil. It is proof that we have work to do.

The fact that we have not solved the problems yet is not an argument to disconnect. It is an argument to engage, especially if you work in technology and already have an arsenal of relevant skills.

You do not learn to govern a tool by refusing to touch it. You learn by using it and understanding well enough to critique it, shape it, contribute to it, and set boundaries around it. You learn how to make it boring.

“Learn AI so you can complain about AI better.” I said it and I meant it. I still do."

A frustration with AI-infused development is when folks aren't using it to solve problems at hand but instead add extras that aren't necessary nor particularly value-add. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean we should be doing it.

LLMs are not an opportunity to abdicate expertise or build your personal knowledge. Seeing folks stop growing or learning because 'the machine can do it' is heartbreaking quite honestly. The folks I've enjoyed working with most have been those focused on adapting and augmenting, not replacing.
