Is there any recourse here?? Been waiting 6 mos for funding decision on a grant that 💯 would have been funded in “normal” times— council in early September ‘25, still waiting. It affects every other work decision - whether/when to submit other grants, whether/when to pursue tenure/promotion, etc.

Our team recently published results of a study where we fed LBP CPGs and other trusted info into LLMs, then gave it a patient scenario and asked for treatment recommendations, then had PTs rate those recs for accuracy and usefulness. Bottom line: even when we help the AI, it still can’t replace us.

Many of us are stuck in purgatory, where our grants haven’t been terminated but they also haven’t sent the notice of award or $ to continue an ongoing grant. 31 days without funding and counting.

“Highly paid insiders at the NIH.” 😂😂😂 MAGA people sometimes show their whole asses. Senior NIH scientists could get a job paying 2x or more in the private sector. But they accept lower pay, and give up ability to start/advise companies, because they believe in America.

They are arresting people on the streets, terminating their visas, and disappearing them for writing things they disagree with. This is where we are. Two months in. Right now. If you think they won’t begin coming after citizens soon, you are mistaken.

Somehow the following two things are true: - most actual scientists cannot read my work for free, and there are strict rules about when/whether I’m allowed to send a copy of my work to an interested fellow scientist - Mark Zuckerberg can just steal it and use it to train his AI tools for profit.

The reasoning is bullshit. The true reasoning is “We, Trump/MAGA political strategists, have determined that the most politically palatable university to attack first is Columbia, and we want other universities and the public to stay quiet while we do this.” They’re coming for you next.

Yes. Journalists should note this: Every science or tech student, age 5-35 today, is looking at the destruction of their career prospects due to Trump and Musk. We should be interviewing those students and talking about the impact to their lives.

Columbia called the cops on students— *like trump wanted*— & this is how Trump responds. One should never comply with evil, but if even your complicity with evil will not save you— & it will not— then why comply? Do not comply; not in advance, not at all. Fight for the right thing, no matter what.

The National Cancer Institute (part of NIH) released new guidelines for "controversial, high-profile or sensitive" keywords that require "review prior to publication" if included in a product or materials. Keywords include abortion, obesity, and peanut allergies.
Materials produced or authored by NCI staff that address topics that may be controversial, high profile, or sensitive must be sent to the NCI Clearance Team for review prior to publication.

Depending on the nature of the information, additional review and clearance by the NCI director, deputy directors, NIH, and HHS may be required. In some cases, the material will not need further review, but the NCI Clearance Team will share it with NCI leadership, NIH, and/or HHS for their awareness.

Examples of controversial or high-profile topics include, but are not limited to:

Cancer Moonshot
NCI budget
COVID-19
Vaccines
H5N1/bird flu
Opioids ,
Marijuana
Dietary guidelines/ultra-processed foods
Obesity
Stem cell or fetal tissue research
Abortion
Autism
Peanut allergies
Fluoride
Measles
Diversity/equity efforts
Gender ideology
Environmental justice
Discussion of federal policies
Topics of federal investigations
Issues concerning pending legislation
Topics that have received recent attention from Congress
Topics that have received widespread or critical media attention

Dear scientists at US universities: Trump/Musk continue to freeze your grants. NIH is not reviewing grants nor funding them in council. This is a backhanded, legal method to effectively stop NIH grants. See thread and linked article. Are we going to “keep our heads down” about this?

Donald Trump and Elon Musk are messing with your Medicare benefits. Democrats passed a law to finally let Medicare negotiate with Big Pharma for lower prices. Now Trump and Musk laid off the negotiators. That means higher drug costs for you. Nothing efficient about that.

Also, entirely unsurprised that the most promising junior scientists are having second thoughts about persisting in academic research. Who would choose this as a career when grants can get yanked at the whim of a single person.
