The soles of a pair of shoes with worn “Giro” branding. Both soles have slightly worn through to the midsole at the heel. One more than the other. Wear is also visible indicating the location of studs on bike pedals.

Your regular reminder that most of the fuel a car burns is wasted and the vast majority of what is actually used to move, goes to moving the giant mass of the car, rather than passengers or cargo. bsky.app/profile/bren...

There are so many great parks and imo their distribution and diversity is part of what makes them great, but it’s really hard to beat Big Marsh.

We all learned about the various models of safety precautions with Covid, right? Swiss cheese, prevention hierarchy? Helmets (ppe) can’t be the only form of protection, but they are effective in certain situations to mitigate injury.

Spent a day on Alaskan Way in Seattle last weekend and … what are we doing with our lakefront?
Bike path on Seattle waterfront. It’s wide, marked like a street, and separated from the car street by a curb, garden, and a stretch of pavement (there’s a wide walking path on the other side.)Seattle waterfront pedestrian and bike facilities. Looking north along the waterfront, water on the left. The walking path is light colored cement with a light texture, a tactile strip runs along the right edge, followed by a pebble texture, another tactile strip, and then a dark asphalt two-way bike path. Between the bike path and the road is a tall cement barrier which lowers to a (1’?) wide curb planted with low plants. In between the walking and bike paths are signposts with neighborhood/event signs. You can see condos on the far side of the street and an enormous cruise ship in the middle distance to the left.

Occurrence of pedestrians on the bike path is way more frequent and worse (imo) here because where are they supposed to be?

So far I’ve seen 100% of pedestrians walking on the bike path (~15 people?), one bike riding north along the sidewalk. 3 bikes going correctly south on the bike path, and one person on a bike riding south on the road looking uncertainly at the options available. @chi.streetsblog.org

I can’t make it tonight, but I did mock up this suggestion. Feel free to steal it, haha.
A diagram drawn over the current Edgebrook road structure showing north Caldwell realigned to a right-angle 3-way intersection with Devon, closure of the segment of Caldwell between Devon and Lehigh as well as the segment of Lehigh between Caldwell and Central. Lehigh then connects directly to Caldwell. So six 4-way intersections become three 4-way and one 3-way intersection, eliminating the intersections at the most acute angles and the slip lane at Caldwell and Devon.

A wide drone shot showing an angle on a city street with the chicago skyline in the distance. FYI, status update from the 35th ward office.
A screenshot of an email from the 35th ward office: “Re: Fw: Logan Square Farmers Market Bike Routing
Hi Emily,
Thanks for reaching out and flagging this for us. We discussed this with the Chamber, which organizes the Farmers Market, as the closure is outside the scope of their permit. They understand this and will not replicate this in future markets.
They are working on different advisory signs to encourage all multi-use path users to exercise caution given the high volume of pedestrians and cyclists in the area. We are meeting with them tomorrow to discuss this further.
Thank you for reaching out!”

Sure, but that doesn’t mean that their statements are categorically untrue. Here’s an alternate source. Still waiting on any source that says that speed doesn’t make crashes more likely. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I can’t disagree that we should have far more rigorous driver training and licensing requirements. Lots of sources will tell you that speed makes crashes more likely (I think it’s also pretty intuitive that higher speed = less chance to react). Here’s an example. www.iihs.org/research-are...
A screenshot of text: “Almost 12,000 deaths - 29% of all crash fatalities — occurred in speed-related crashes in 2023. High speeds make a crash more likely because drivers have less time to react and because it requires a longer distance to stop or slow down. They also make collisions more deadly because modest increases in speed cause large increases in crash energy.”

The money was spent, the lanes drastically increased bike ridership and didn’t cause congestion and they’re going to spend more money now removing the protection because drivers are so coddled their “confusion” is more important than the safety of non-drivers.
A screenshot of the article which reads, “Counts of bicycle traffic since the bike lanes were installed showed that traffic increased sixfold. Engineers also didn't find any major congestion issues with automobiles after the revamp.
Some council members said some residents told them the layout was confusing and hard to navigate. The city has been discussing a change almost since the bike lanes were added, designing alternatives and doing outreach.”
