#FossilFriday. In 1950, 10-year-old Stephen found a fossil #sponge on the beach at Seaford, East Sussex & donated it @nhm-london.bsky.social. 75 years later, Stephen visited us to see the specimen! Thanks to all the #ChalkHeroes who donated their finds over the years and make our research possible.

It's finally out! 200 years since the description of Eurypterus remipes, the first eurypterid named in the scientific literature, I present a summary of the history of eurypterid research and an updated taxonomy of every known species.🧪⚒️ doi.org/10.1206/0003...

Codex Eurypterida: A Revised Taxonomy Based on Concordant Parsimony and Bayesian Phylogenetic Analyses
Eurypterids, also known as sea scorpions, were aquatic chelicerate arthropods that were important components of Paleozoic marine and freshwater ecosystems from the Ordovician to the Permian. The group...

Congrats to @desisurvey.bsky.social - it's looking more & more like dark energy isn't Einstein's cosmological constant! If you've woken up to the news & are searching for the publications, they don't appear to be on arxiv 🤷‍♀️ but they are online. 🔭 #cosmology 🧪 ℹ️: data.desi.lbl.gov/public/paper...
A graph of the evolution of the dark energy (vertical axis) as a function of time (redshift on the horizontal axis) - showing an offset from the cosmological constant (a flat horizontal line). Here is the figure caption from the paper:
FIG. 12. Comparison of the constraints on the equation of
state of dark energy using the CPL parametrization and a bin-
ning reconstruction approach, using DESI+CMB+DESY5.
The solid green line shows the best-fit w(z) based on w0 and
wa inference and the green contours around it represent the
68% and 95% confidence intervals. We also show in blue the
constraints from the binning approach [47], with the hori-
zontal bars indicating the bin width (which is fixed) and the
vertical bars representing the 1σ error. Additionally, we in-
clude in gray the 1D posterior for each binning parameter.
The ΛCDM limit corresponds to the horizontal gray dashed
line.

For #FossilFriday meet Dunbaria. Isn't this fossil gorgeous? It was found in ~285 million year old rocks in Elmo, USA. It's a member of an order called the Palaeodictyoptera. Those patches you can see on the wings represent the colouration of the wings in life, preserved in a fossil 🤯 ⚒️🧪🦀🦑 #evosky
A fossil insect - it is in a greyish rock, and you can see the fossil from above - i.e. we're looking at the dorsal surface. The head is clearly visible towards the top, and then below this two wings - arranged and shaped much like those of a dragonfly - stick out sideways. These have light and dark bands on them. Between these is a body which ends in a long 'tail' - actually two things called cercie sticking out its back. The fossil, apart from the light patches in the wings, is darker than the surrounding rock. A reconstruction of that insect fossil in monochrome, showing the colouration patterns on the wings and also more details of the head and thorax - including pointy mouthparts and an extra set of winglets on the first segment of the thorax.

CONFIRMED: Trump has banned Associated Press from the White House & Air Force One for refusing to use the term “Gulf of America”. The WH Press Sec accuses them of ‘pushing lies’. At this point, EVERY reporter should have walked out. If the media won’t defend the 1st Amendment what are they for?

What happens when Valentine's Day and #FossilFriday collide? Hippopodium ponderosum (plate 61) by George B. Sowerby (1812-1884). We ❤️ fossils. #LoveIsAllAround View his full collection of 148 watercolours via our #DigitisedCollections buff.ly/4hzvfgF #ValentinesDay #Conchology #Valentines

New #paleoart to accompany a new paper on the skull of Vegavis, a Mesozoic bird that seems to be closely related to modern waterfowl, pushing the ancestry of modern birds into the Age of Reptiles. Link to paper: www.nature.com/articles/s41... #sciart #dinosaurs #birds #evolution
A flock of black and white diving birds float on and dive into Cretaceous seas. They are foraging for small ichthyodectiform fish that have already attracted attention from slightly frightening red Pachydiscus ammonites, which the birds send reeling as they swim around them. Further out are the silhouettes of approaching elasmosaurs. Against the sunset sky above, more birds fly in from the upper left, while floating birds variably consume fish, take it easy, or stare at us, breaking the fourth wall. They seem to ask "is anyone even looking at this part of the image, or did they just look at the centre for two seconds and move on?"

Phyllochrysa may have also been mimicking Selaginella, which was later identified from the Myanmar amber by Schmidt et al, 2022. This is a diagram I made for a blog in 2019, so it needs updating. Also, just a note: Myanmar amber is ethically horrible, and studies on it should no longer be supported.
Diagram with pictures of a frilly league like insect, and some plant remains in amber, and a photo of a living selaginella. In the top left there is a drawing of a frilly, leaf like insect larvae, and on the left there is an insect with long jaws carrying a mound of debris on its back.

This is a piece done before our #paleostream formation series started, I did it for purely educational purposes. The Jialingjiang formation is for me one of the most interesting Triassic formations, not just because it's the only place where we find hupehsuchians. #paleoart #sciart #triassic
