Happy “There Will Come Soft Rains” Day to those who celebrate.

There Will Come Soft Rains
By: Ray Bradbury
In the living room the voice-clock sang, Tick-tock, seven o'clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o 'clock! as if it were afraid that nobody would. The morning house lay empty. The clock ticked on, repeating and repeating its sounds into the emptiness. Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine!
In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunny side up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two cool glasses of milk.
"Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling,
, "in the city of
Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake. "Today is Mr.
Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills."

This is really important. The US government wants to end independent scientific and medical research. Please comment and push back on the sweeping proposal that would give the White House veto and clawback power over Federal R&D funding. Here's guidance

Academics of all stripes should actively oppose the illegal order to reduce indirect cost reimbursements. This order violates both federal regulations and the Administrative Procedures Act. Implementation would hurt scholarship throughout all disciplines. samwang.substack.com/p/indirect-c...

FWIW close to Bourbon Street, along the Mississippi, there's a weatherworn statue dedicated to immigrants. That's the thought: person of marble, white because, duh, they're marble. People have draped the statue's raised hand in dangling bright party beads. I took this photo a couple weeks ago.

Androgynous looking weatherworn classically draped statue with one arm raised. Blue sky background. Location is on the Moon Walk in New Orleans. The raised hand is draped with bright metallic Mardi Gras beads in silver, green, purple...dangling down, clearly more recent than the statue because there is an older necklace that has mostly broken apart and the others look quite new

Wheezy, our new boy, from Bakersfield, napping, bum warmed by nearby rad, security provided by underside of bed. Hadn’t imagined having a cat in the house again, this soon, but he’s special, not to mention special-needs. Deeply charming, too.

it’s definitely tied up with innocence. i think especially in a situation like this, with so many people conflating all palestinians with hamas, some might think it’s harder to sell the idea that innocent adults have been killed. there’s always that tiny bit of room for doubt.
