worth tying this into the political economy of the slave south as well. from roughly the 1820s onwards, slavery became enormously lucrative in ways that had never been seen before. slave traders became millionaires. large planters had tremendous purchasing power. just huge amounts of wealth.

As a Jewish student raised on stories of my family’s survival during the Shoah, I know how attempts to erase the humanity or identity of entire groups of people inevitably pave the way for violence. The belief that true freedom and liberation can only exist when all of us are free was a core value of that same upbringing. I will not allow Mahmoud’s humanity to be erased. I am not writing this to convince anyone of anything about my friend and former classmate. I am writing it because the truth matters. Mahmoud has not been charged with a crime.
