It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

My wife: Can you read our baby a book?
Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.
Me: I can train a voice model.
Parenting hits different when you work in Al.

It's hard to overstate how much food in the US tastes like expensive water. I'm eating convenience store hummus in Toronto and it tastes INTENSELY of sesame, so good. The black olives I got with it? The only place you get olives like that in NYC is Sahadi's.

This is very neat, and a little bit of #queer history / culture. Alan Turing, the father of modern computing, wrote racy gay short stories with him as the protagonist. The story stems from his 1951 sexual encounter, which led to his arrest. 🧪🏳️‍🌈

Alan Turing’s gay short story reveals ‘fun, cheeky’ man
A racy short story by the ‘father of modern computing’ rips up Alan Turing’s ‘isolated mathematician’ image, revealing a playful man overcoming trauma and defiantly embracing his homosexuality.

It was named “Artificial Intelligence” in 1955 to get funding for a 1956 workshop. The naming was an act of branding: Something that sounded exciting & positive, without needing to be clearly defined. It was also a “line in the sand” to exclude Norbert Wiener, of cybernetics fame, in part because…2/

This is getting a lot of quotes, so I feel I should correct this a bit (sorry @anildash.com!) “AI” was 100% born toxic! The first AI workshop was born from the field of “automata studies”, and…1/ (Pictured: the folks who convened for the first workshop. Notice anything notable here?)

I could maybe see how one might not pick up on the transphobia for like 2/3 of the paper. But then the paper goes off for a paragraph complaining about being "shamed" for doing an unpopular flavor of feminism. That's a big transphobe alarm bell!

We need to rephrase the whole discussion in terms of hazardous products, instead of "minds". And then we need to make sure that there's liability. A model hacks someone? Put a C-suite guy in jail. A model produces sexual harassment material? Put a C-suite guy in jail. Watch how fast things get safe
