One of the most interesting conversations at BSDCan wasn't about a new feature—it was about where FreeBSD could go next. For @allanjude.com, it was the conversations around FreeBSD jails and ongoing work to improve namespacing. Watch more: na3.hubs.ly/y0xGnP0 #FreeBSD #BSDCan

Foxes In Love @foxes-in-love.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Green is carrying Blue on top of his head. Blue looks wide-eyed and stunned, completely wrung dry and shriveled, hanging limp like a rag.
Narration: How to revive an oversocialised introvert:
1. Gently remove from crowds.

Green gently lowers shriveled Blue into a metal stock pot. The pot's lid is leaning against the pot on the side.
Narration: 2. Place in a chilled, dark and quiet place, away from strong smells and sounds.

Sitting down to wait next to the now lidded pot, Green reads a newspaper.
Narration: 3. Let simmer until normal.

Green turns to look towards the pot as Blue peers out, still not fully recovered but now looking much more like his regular self.
Green: Feeling any better yet?
Blue: A little.

Modern media production isn’t one workload—it’s many. ZFS lets each dataset be tuned for its job: large renders, small database I/O, or mixed editorial files—all on the same pool. In a real NVMe environment: 55+ GiB/s reads, 35 GiB/s writes, up to 123% gains. 👉 Read: na3.hubs.ly/y0tj-_0

Made very few changes to the latest build and was thinking maybe I'll be able to ship this one without incrementing the shame version (last number in a version number) and 2 minutes into testing, it's already getting bumped.

Replicate VM datasets between Proxmox nodes using native ZFS tooling. zfs send -c pool/vmdata@snap | zfs receive backup/vmdata Compression reduces transfer time, while ZFS checksums ensure what arrives is exactly what you sent.

It would be automatic, but the L2ARC generally only catches a fraction of what is being evicted from the ARC. If your DDT is so large, a special vdev might be better (needs redundancy unlike L2ARC). With fast setup you can limit the size of the DDT to prevent it being so big in the first place

I am saying every commit to the upstream OpenZFS repo is replicated into the FreeBSD repo unchanged, with the original commit message (and author)

Damn autocorrect, that should say "Vendoring" process
130
Allan Jude @allanjude.com · 20/06/2025
As you likely know, FreeBSD uses the "censoring" process to include 3rd party software. That means it contains a complete copy from upstream. Are you also going to complain about OpenSSL commits that are fixes for Linux? OpenSSH commits that only impact OpenBSD? It is part of tracking upstream.
140
Allan Jude @allanjude.com · 20/06/2025
Your view seems rather distorted. The relatime change didn't impact FreeBSD and zfsd is FreeBSD specific, so you can't blame OpenZFS. If you are having issues, I would recommend contacting KlaraSystems.com for FreeBSD specific ZFS support and big fixing

zfsd is a FreeBSD only feature. The change was made by a FreeBSD developer working at a FreeBSD enterprise user. Why is your fabric resulting in an I/O taking 30 seconds?
210
Allan Jude @allanjude.com · 20/06/2025
I don't know what you are talking about here. This has absolutely no impact on FreeBSD, there is no such thing as 'relative atime' on FreeBSD.

RAID is not a backup, it protects availability and uptime, not your data. Pair RAID with a full disaster recovery plan to ensure both the availability and resiliency of your data. Good backups start with one simple question: What are you protecting your data from?
