My paperback horror for the Parisian heat wave was Scott Smith's THE RUINS (is it vintage if it's 20 years old?). Not weird enough for eco-horror, too goofy for effective thriller (killer vines). Can't wait to watch the 2008 box-office bomb adaptation inexplicably produced by Ben Stiller

Last month's paperback horror: Wonderfully moody, Lottery-esque story filled with creeping dread and a villain who'd fit just as well in our current political climate. Joan Samson's only novel, released just prior to her death from brain cancer; the new afterword from her widower brought tears.
