"The first time that the housewife has been considered as a person contributing to the community" In 1943 the YWCA assessed how the proposals of the Beveridge Report would affect women - in paid and unpaid work. More sources on Beveridge & the British welfare state at warwick.ac.uk/services/lib...
Front page of 'News for Citizens', news sheet published by the Young Women's Christian Association in March 1943. It is a special edition on the Beveridge Report and includes a cartoon showing some of the different categories of people affected by the proposed welfare reforms (wage earners, self-employed, the 'housewife', 'the man of means', the schoolboy and grandfather). The rest of the page provides information about the background to the report and the proposals.

Remembering June Sinclair. #HolocaustMemorialDay #HMD #ChannelIslands #Jersey #JerseyHeritage
Joe Mière wrote the following of June Sinclair in his book Never to be Forgotten (2004, 157):

She was a half-Jewish orphan from London. She came to Jersey in 1939. For a time she was our next door neighbour at 27 Midvale Road, St Helier. At the beginning of the German Occupation she worked in one of the hotels the Germans had requisitioned – the Continental Hotel in St Saviour’s Road. She told my mother that all her family had been killed during a German raid on London.

One day at the hotel where she worked, a German officer tried to kiss her and passed rude remarks about her. She retaliated by slapping his face. The next day she was arrested by the German military police, imprisoned and … deported to Fresnes prison in France. Later on she was transferred to the concentration camp at Brens, near Gaillac, France. Later she was put on a transport to the concentration camp at Ravensbrück where she was killed … in 1943. She was 23 years old.The Stolpersteine for June, St Helier, Jersey.

A black-and-white photograph of Marie Curie, a woman with dark hair pulled back, seated at a wooden desk in a laboratory setting. She is turned toward the camera, resting her chin on her left hand, and appears thoughtful or serious. She wears a dark dress or coat. The desk in front of her has various scientific apparatuses, including a wooden stand and glass beakers, in the background.

Over 150 works of fiction were held in the students' library at St David's College in 1889. These included lots of Dickens, Wilkie Collins and of course Trollope's tales of Barchester life. More surprising in an all male college, were Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Jane Eyre.

(1/2) Big Garden Birdwatch (23rd - 25th January 2026) is the world's largest garden wildlife survey which, every year, helps the RSPB to build a picture of how garden birds are faring in the UK. #rspb #biggardenbirdwatch #GwylioAdarYrArdd #uwtsdlib #pcyddsllyf @uwtsd.bsky.social
The image is a promotional poster on a teal background for a birdwatching event. At the top left is the RSPB logo, featuring a stylized bird's head on a half-blue, half-green circle with "RSPB" written in white. Below the logo is Welsh text in black. The center of the poster showcases a photograph of a small bird, specifically a great tit, perched on mossy vegetation against a blurred, natural brown background. Below the photo, a silhouette of a person with binoculars is observing a flying bird silhouette. At the bottom, there are two logos. On the left, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David's logo, and on the right, the "Books & Beyond" logo depicting an open book with rays extending upward. The English event details are written in black below the photograph.
