killer antique store find this week #birds

two vintage mugs with bird illustrations on them. both are white, one with an orange base and a cedar waxwing, and the other with a yellow base and a bird i can't quite identify. it has a black breast and head, with yellow on the back of the head. it's wings/tail are predominantly a lighter yellow, with bands of white.

for anyone else curious, the flag was saved, and here's what it actually looks like, although the color has faded over the past 110 years. (source is unfortunately facebook www.facebook.com/NewMexicoHis...)

new spot the oriole game as a late submission to the #worstbirdpic trend poor guy got scared away from my feeder by a mockingbird before i could get a picture, and before he could even grab a bite, and this is where i found him when i rushed outside #birds

hell yeah this rules

a set of wooden upgrades for the board game wingspan from meeplesource sitting on a table.
in the middle is a wooden dice tower filled with wood versions of the 6 food types in the game. a large scissor-tailed flycatcher meeple sits on top as a first player marker, and surrounding it are 7 sets of 8 smaller bird meeples: barn owls, rainbow lorikeets, lilac-breasted rollers, cedar waxwings, northern cardinals, common ravens, and common kingfishers.

flowers were more cooperative though

new year, same #birds may your weekend be as chill as this dove

a photograph through a fence with vertical black metal bars of a mourning dove laying down in the grass, the most relaxed i've ever seen a bird, and quite possibly more relaxed than i've been in my entire life.

a closer up photo of the dove from the first picture, almost all the way up to the fence. had i switched to portrait, i probably could have put my phone entirely between the bars. the dove has noticed me at this point, but will not let this affect it. truly the avian embodiment of the "unbothered. moisturized. happy. in my lane. focused. flourishing." meme.

happy mothday everyone i've seen a ton of neat moths in the past couple years, here's some of the highlights

a small rosy maple moth, light pink with yellow on the back and abdomen sitting on my girlfriend's outstretched finger, facing towards the left of the frame. it's antennae are sticking straight out, and zooming in, you can make out part of its face.

a luna moth sitting on a white brick wall, facing upwards, with wings beautifully splayed out. a small bit of pale yellow thorax can be seen, from which the wings stick out, with the top of them looking almost like tree branches, with a small "seed pod" pattern sticking onto the wing about halfway down. the wings themselves are a pale lime green, and the hind wings dip far downwards in the very middle, forming what looks like a tail. the photo is taken from slightly above the moth, looking at it from the right.

a regal moth which is calmly sitting in the palm of my hand. it has a primarily orange body with mostly gray wings. the body has some pale yellow spots, and the wings have an orange vein pattern branching down towards the end of the wings, and more pale yellow spots forming a line across both wings with perfect symmetry. it's approximately the size of my four main fingers.

a cecropia moth, the largest species native to north america, sitting on a black railing, just above the ground. it has a deep red body, with dark brown wings. four off white crescent moon patterns are visible on the wings, two on each side of the wings. a sort of tie-dye esque pattern appears below them, with a white and red rough line going fully across both wings almost at the bottom.

the rare software developer who prefers going outside to sitting at a desk, i don't get out to bird as much as i'd like, but here's a few of my favorite shots
