*One guy, dang typos. But yeah having the entire company move to the whims of a single man who basically can’t be opposed by anyone is just really dangerous given the power they wield in the world. I’d prefer a board controlled by institutional investors who only care about returns.

All big tech companies are odious, but I at least have a slight preference for tech companies that aren’t fully controlled by own guy who is the founder CEO. So Apple/Microsoft/Google rank higher for me than Meta/OpenAI/Amazon/SpaceX.

Though, I’d say that in terms of ways of “democratic” decision making, my preferences are: 1) Proportionally representative legislature 2) Ballot measures 3) Gerrymandered legislatures

My point is mainly that when I learned about Socrates in history class, we didn’t hear a thing about the 30 tyrants. It just seemed like he was punished for spreading some harmless ideas, when the reality was that he was punished for his relationship with people who did awful, violent stuff.

They assumed that the members of each branch of government would have inherent interest in protecting their own power above partisan loyalties. Which was a stupid assumption that fell apart almost immediately.

I suddenly become a lot more pro-killing Socrates when I found out that the youths he was accused of corrupting weren’t just little troublemakers, but like the key participants of a plots that overthrew the city’s government and did a bunch of executions of political enemies.

The opposition to direct democracy isn’t so much worrying about majoritarianism, which Madison thought was, in fact, good, but rather worried about the people being stirred up and making bad decisions in fits of passion. The layer of representatives was meant to allow for more measured deliberation.

Oh no no no, that’s not quite what I was saying. I included in my 2nd reply the below letter from Madison arguing IN FAVOR of majoritarianism. But thinking that the legislative majority should represent the majority of the electorate is different than supporting direct democracy.

This is the biggest thing to know to inoculate people against the idea that the founders opposed our modern idea of democracy; that when they sometimes spoke disparagingly about “democracy”, it was about Athenian democracy specifically.

Horrifying: Arizona Democratic congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia was raped by a man after he knocked her out. Another man approached her to do the same. “She began swinging her foot at him. ‘Not even worth it,’ she heard the man say as he moved away.”

I was a Republican growing up as a teenager, and 2016 was the first election where I could vote. My libertarian-self was disgusted by Trump and intrigued by Bernie, so I jumped from hating Clinton from the right to hating Clinton but from the left. I'm not so strict about it really, but what I'm really trying to get at is that if we are basically having a live conversation, where both of us are looking at our phones and responding back and forth immediately, it would just be easier to be talking to each other.

not that you should expect anything more than rank idiocy from this pair of racists, but the idea that whiteness means a "high trust" society of "social cohesion" is some of the stupidest shit i have ever heard. these people live in a fantasy land that you could dispel by simply opening a book.

The majority government, cobbled together by three parties who together have a majority, *should* be a blend of those three parties’ policies, with a slant towards the parties with the higher vote share.
100
Aliensinnoh @aliensinnoh.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Some of their policies get enacted in exchange for their support, yes. Is it better for all of the 35% party’s policies to get enacted with no input from the other parties, just because votes were distributed in such a way that they received a majority in parliament?
100
Aliensinnoh @aliensinnoh.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It's not disproportionate. If you want to form a government, you have to convince representatives who represent a majority of the voters to agree with you. How is that more disproportionate than saying a party that got 35% percent of the vote gets to rule because of vote distribution across parties?
120
Aliensinnoh @aliensinnoh.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I disagree. Proportional is the perfect system. The reason you're giving for saying it's not is simply a rejection of the will of the voters who voted for that extremism. I want an electoral system that represents the will of the voters.

I think this election shows that increasing gasoline prices is political poison. It would be even more so for Dems than Rs. Doing things that make oil more expensive (like blocking drilling) just won't work politically in the US. Climate policy needs to be focused on positively building green.

Luckily for us, Vance is so sauceless that I’m pretty sure no amount of media glazing can make him president. The only chance he has at the presidency is if Trump dies in the next two years. Which would actually be bad; Vance is worse.

This is why it is essential for the next president we elect to be a firebrand on this stuff. They should make it embarrassing for congressional dems to say stuff like this and to oppose institutional changes.
