If you take a course in psych of language, they actually DO teach the idea that humans are "next-word predictors"... as an outdated theory that was discarded literal decades ago. I love how Billy treats ignorance as his greatest strength.

this is real dunning-kruger stuff he's doing, and I'm not a computational linguist myself, but an answer to why LLMs don't think is that they don't understand the *meaning* of words because to understand meaning you would have to also exist outside of a language model, which an LLM does not
