Enjoyed chatting about my project whilst at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source. Access to MuX opens up a whole new realm of possibility for non-destructive analysis on archaeological material- not just coins! www.isis.stfc.ac.uk/science-high...

World’s first money pays a visit to ISIS - ISIS Neutron and Muon Source
They say money makes the world go round. If that’s true, then 2600 years ago the Kingdom of Lydia must have set the ancient world spinning when they invented the world’s first coins.

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: this absolutely stunning #Roman ribbed bowl was unearthed fully intact with little to no wear during excavations in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Monochrome ribbed bowls made of brightly coloured glass were very popular throughout...🧵 1/2 📷me 🏺 #archaeology

You can read The Armitt’s Roman Ambleside digital trail entry on the sling bullets and our knowledge of the so-called Battle of Ambleside here, researched and written by @arcdurham.bsky.social student Isla Mustin #RomanFortThursday www.armittdigitaltrail.co.uk/lead-bullets

Discovered dispersed across the Ambleside Roman fort site are these lead bullets. These are evidence that there could have been a Battle of Ambleside.

And here is the final photo for the trail itself 😱 Recent work by Edinburgh Uni and @trimontiumtrust.bsky.social suggests the sling bullets, all found scattered extramurally, are evidence for at least one battle outside the fort between the Roman army and the local population. #RomanFortThursday
Professional photograph of lead sling bullets from Roman Ambleside, taken by Durham archaeology students Rowan Colley and Isla Mustin. The bullets are cream coloured. Some are lemon-shaped, and others are more hastily formed blobs.

They also got the chance to learn about object photography - many of the trail photographs are their own work 🤩 - and get embedded in The Armitt’s ongoing collections audit. Here is Rowan photographing lead sling bullets from The Armitt’s collections… #RomanFortThursday
