I reckon he was just too lazy to cite everything as fussily as an academic because: a) he was posting things daily b) he is not an academic, he's a blogger. That's not to say he did no citations. But they certainly weren't enough to trace down all the sources of the ideas in the Sequences.

No, I'm pretty sure EY learnt all this stuff from elsewhere and didn't invent much of it e.g. the map territory thing he (indirectly) got from general semantics, the stuff about the nature of truth he got from Pierce etc.

Davidad has an interesting take on this on the other site. Models are more like service dogs than wolves, and they need to be helpful to flourish.

A man traveling across a field encountered a boston dynamics hunter killer. He fled, the hunter killer after him. Coming to a precipice, he caught hold of an ethernet cable of a nearby data centre and swung himself down over the edge. The robot pointed sensors down at him from above. Trembling, the man looked down to where, far below, another hunter killer was waiting to ‘clip him.

Only the ethernet cable sustained him. Two maintenance roombas, one white and one black, little by little started to gnaw away at the cable. The man saw a 240fps touch screen in front of him displaying a bsky feed. Grasping the cable with one hand, he scrolled with the other.

How sweet the feed!

Thiel's "be evil bc. it's actually good and neglected" shtick irritates me more than the EAs importance/tractability/neglectedness shtick. These are situationally useful heuristics for temporarily constraining the search space. Don't make them hard rules. Do what is best.

>[soulslike games are] punishment for the sake of punishment games This is absurd. This is hardly Super Meat Boy, let alone unfair ball-breakers like IWBTG. Indeed, Dark Souls is a very fair game. And Souls-likes have much to offer besides fairness! A Gene Wolfe approach to story, for one thing.

I think if you come in with good thoughts and questions about the orgs work, that conveys you are a sharp, curious thinker which is a lot of what makes a generalist.

Roles I think I could be a good fit for: a writer/researcher role, evals, project management, or anything that requires a generalist skillset. Especially anything that requires being steeped in LW/AI alignment background knowledge for over a decade.

towards a mythology of computational substrate
Monumental interior of a contemporary semiconductor fabrication facility, a massive EUV lithography scanner at the luminous center, architecture fractured into vast overlapping prisms and crystalline planes, cubist industrial modernism fused with Soviet monumental painting. Radiant golden white plasma light erupts through the machine like a technological sun, angular beams cutting across lavender haze, steel blue shadows and pearlescent cleanroom whites. Colossal ventilation ducts, vacuum chambers, utility pipes, gantries, and overhead FOUP transport rails form a dense geometric symphony. Tiny cleanroom technicians in white bunny suits silhouetted on elevated walkways convey immense scale. Sterile precision rendered with vigorous painterly brushwork, translucent layers, smoky edges, faceted reflections. Simultaneously utopian and overwhelming, the fab portrayed as the blast furnace of the information age. Abstract yet architecturally convincing, museum scale oil painting. No text, no logos, no readable signage. --chaos 22 --ar 4:5 --stylize 650 --weird 180 --v 8.2Monumental interior of a contemporary semiconductor fabrication facility, a massive EUV lithography scanner at the luminous center, architecture fractured into vast overlapping prisms and crystalline planes, cubist industrial modernism fused with Soviet monumental painting.
