FFC’s Dracula is full of old and new (in the 90s) special effects and gorgeous color. Just watch it on mute. I also love the weirdness of Altered States and the grime of Kurosawa’s Pulse.
Pulse (2001), a woman sits at a desk full of computers with her back to the camera

The first—and likely last—time my dissertation research has been helpful was when I corrected @davidlsims.bsky.social and @jjdotbiz.bsky.social put it in the Blank Check newsletter
I want to end this week's dossier section with a shout out to Alex Thompson, who wrote his PhD dissertation at Ohio State about the history of legacyquels. In this week's episode, the boys considered whether The Color of Money might be the first big Hollywood legacyquel, but in Alex's research, he pinpointed 1947's The Sin of Harold Diddlebock as the pioneer of the form. In that Preston Sturges-directed movie, silent film comedian Harold Lloyd reprised the role he played in 1925's The Freshman. Unlike Color of Money, however, the film was not a great success for its director or legendary star, as it was quickly pulled from circulation by its producer Howard Hughes (more on him in December) before reappearing in re-edited form in 1950 as Mad Wednesday, also to lackluster results. The film had been Lloyd's first feature in nearly a decade, and though he did not die until 1971, it was also ultimately his last.

I have decided it is very rude of the Apple doc about the UConn Women’s Basketball team to rush through my years there watching Maya Moore and company kick some fucking ass on the daily. Like 30 seconds were spent on ‘06-‘10. Cater to me better!

I’m two thirds of the way through a triple feature at the movies. Tony is a wonderful Bildungsroman with a great cast. The Rivals of Amziah King is a must see if you like little movies with big impact. Hoping Camp Miasma rounds out a lovely day at the pictures

This is someone who never had to work before grad school, never move around multiple times following a series of postdocs, never once adjunct a single class, all to tell us that he knows the real horrors of academia because he once heard a land acknowledgment at a conference.

But you see that this article was written by Gita Jackson and is taking Wilson’s article in good faith by responding to it with sound evidence and reasoning, right? It is possible that people are being assholes to Wilson AND Wilson’s argument has major flaws
020
Alex Thompson @alexthompson.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Wilson is very good at talking about adaptational choices. What she is less good at is talking about the way films are made and experienced because she has devoted a lot of time and energy to her work. This is common in the world of academia, and it isn’t really a problem, it’s just a tendency

Alex Thompson @alexthompson.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
If you think Gita Jackson is a boor (or bore), fanboy, or misogynist, I invite you to actually read their article. I also don’t understand why you can’t admit that someone who doesn’t have much experience writing or thinking about filmmaking as an art form might not have the best film criticism(1/2)

Here are two examples from the article
Near the start of this essay Wilson writes that
"Adaptations needn't and shouldn't follow the original with anything like the exactitude of a translation," but the rest of the essay doesn't really support that notion. If that were true, she would not take such an issue with the things that denote that The Odyssey is an action movie. She seems not to get that the moving image is a language of its own, with its own grammar and syntax, and learning how to read cinema is its own skill-one that she lacks.Even if The Odyssey is based on an epic poem, when it's translated into a movie it can become many things, depending on genre. In reading Wilson's essay, I feel like her main criticism of Nolan's The Odyssey is that it is an action movie at all-that it has spectacle, that it's loud, that Agamemnon's armor is a visual reference to Darth Vader. But it is the bigness and the loudness and the striking images that action movies create their meaning. One of the most loaded and exciting images of all time is Will Smith emerging from a KKK robe during an undercover sting in the opening of Bad Boys II, orange light dancing off his dark skin as his body mirrors the burning cross behind him. The movie is really dumb, but that doesn't have an absence of meaning.

Look, anyone can have a good opinion about art. Equally, anyone can have a bad one. Knowing more about the form in question usually helps to develop a stronger opinion. What Gita is saying in the article is that Wilson’s opinion on the movie does not evince an understanding of how movies work
180
Alex Thompson @alexthompson.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
She is allowed her opinion! Of course! And yet, we can also understand that her opinion on filmmaking (something film critics develop by seeing a bunch of movies and studying the form) is not as well founded as her opinion on the classics. This is what the article you’re responding to is about
180
Alex Thompson @alexthompson.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
The difference between these two things is that Martin Scorsese knows a lot about filmmaking and moviegoing, whereas Wilson is commenting on an entirely different artistic form than where her area of expertise is. Wilson shows that she doesn’t understand several key aspects of filmmaking

Sure, or amazing. Really important to figure out why each movie gets its premature designation, and who gives it out. Are racists on X declaring The Odyssey a woke money grab the same as people complaining about the umpteenth Marvel trailer looking the same as all the rest? No, and with imp. diffs!

I don’t think it’s very anticommunist. The solidarity within the core group of astronauts/scientists is contrasted with the state’s secrecy and surveillance throughout. There’s some stuff around the edges about life in the USSR that feels a little propagandistic but the rest is solid

I took a class taught by Pickering in my first semester at UConn as an undergraduate. He never brought the movie up, nor did he really show any signs of being super inspiring (though it was a grammar class, hard to be inspiring there)
