👋 I'm going to take a break from social media for a while, at least until the end of 2026. All the best.

I have to take a closer look, but it doesn't present the PWA install prompt, while the regular Chrome app does.

Yes. I saw developer.chrome.com/blog/seamles... but it's same-site only (also of course there are iOS users and outdated browsers)

I'm trying to open the system web browser from an installed PWA (think target="_blank" on an anchor tag). Apparently that is not possible: web.dev/learn/pwa/wi... 😞 The URL under which the PWA is available has changed, and I want to direct users to the new place. Anyone know of a workaround?

I'm not mad at all, not sure why you're saying that. But maybe disillusioned with tech in general.

Taking your money elsewhere is *exactly* what you should do! And we should be thankful that that's even an option. What I'm saying (poorly?) is that I don't understand when people are surprised that these things happen, and are "disappointed" in those companies.

I agree that it's counter-productive. But it's the internet and everything has to be enraging and divisive. 😞 My point is just that I think it's unwise to get attached to for-profit entities (especially publicly-held ones) if you expect them to confirm to your values.

Alex Suzuki @alexsuzuki.com · 03/09/2026
I think one mistake some people make is thinking or expecting corporations to act morally/ethically. They're by design entities that maximize profit for shareholders, nothing more, nothing less.

Banks don't really build their core infrastructure themselves. They mostly use "core banking software". And some of that still runs on mainframes. Good luck with zero-downtime deployment there.

Maybe it’s not about the destination, but the tokens you burned along the way.

I’m particularly interested in the TTL of the low effort creations. Will their creators, obviously feeling less attachment to these quick flings get bored and move on to the next thing?

What helps me personally is real-life, offline interactions with like-minded people. And definitely less consuming social media and Hacker News. But I'd be lying if I'd say it hasn't taken a toll on me mentally. And I worry about my kids, constantly. 😞

The death of folk graphic design in favor of AI slop across our country's delis is leading to some incredibly Lovecraftian food horrors

Went to the cinema with my daughter on Saturday and watched "Spiderman: Brand New Day". It was surprisingly enjoyable!

It's crazy how shady meetup.com has become. Clicking on virtually any element of a meetup's page (e.g. Attendees) opens a blocking modal asking you to sign up for Meetup+. There's no option to close or cancel. But hey, at least you get some random AI-generated image slop with it...
Screenshot of blocking "Join Meetup+" modal, with no option to close and no light dismiss.

I switched my business from Google Workspace to Proton’s Business plans, very happy so far! The productivity suite (Docs, Sheets etc.) doesn’t compare to Google’s offering though.

I wrote an essay about why I'm done using AI for coding, even if it costs me my job and career: brettcodes.com/im-done-usin... The basic gist is: AI made me a worse, apathetic programmer. I think it's bad for humanity, the planet, and the craft of software engineering. And I'm done using it.

Why I'm stopping using AI for coding (and anything else) after using it earnestly for a year and coming to understand the harms it causes on personal, societal, and environmental levels.

I read your essay and also watched the "rambling version" on YT. Thank you so much for taking the time and having the courage for saying this. I feel the same way and sometimes think I'm going crazy... with so many people around you going all-in on AI, you start to wonder if you're the problem.

My kids are the same age difference, it’s tough. Strong sibling rivalry. My advice is to not be too hard on yourself, as you’ll inevitably fail to live up to your own standards.

In my bubble/peer group, most are driven by money. They could choose to do something that they’d enjoy more (or hate less?), but that would mean earn less.

I work solo on my product, so having an LLM review my code (that I write myself) is useful to me: every bug it finds in my code is one less. For me the article’s strongest argument against using AI to write code is the loss of ownership/connection.

I don’t understand why you work like this on *side* projects then? Why delegate the work when the work itself is enjoyable and by definition not bound to the same constarints as <day job>?

Last time I encountered Prolog was at university, and that's quite a while ago. But man, it was so elegant. 🙂 And yeah, agree cargo-culting existed before AI, but the speed/churn at the moment is IMHO unprecedented.
