Tales from driving through rural Michigan last weekend for my son's water polo tournament: Saw as many El-Sayed signs as Rodgers signs, and this was in deep farm country. Compare this to 2024 when there were Trump signs EVERYWHERE out in the sticks. The vibes—they are promising.

Does he have weaknesses? Sure. He needs to make inroads with the black vote, as Steven's victory in Detroit shows, but IF the DCCC gets behind him and he gets a few key endorsements (which he should, now that he's the nominee), he'll be fine. As much as we claim everyone is hyper polarized, there's actually a lot of independents in this state, and last night is proof that El-Sayed was winning them HARD. He speaks to the issues that are affecting people in this state, and he's going to wipe the floor with Rodgers in a debate.

3) The racist attacks will begin immediately on behalf of Republican opponent Mike Rodgers and the GOP establishment, and they will work with a lot of Michigan voters (but the MAGA nuts were never going to vote for him anyway). That said, I think El-Sayed has a great chance to win in November.

And progressives won pretty much across the board last night throughout the state. Will Lawrence won decisively in the 7th. McKinney ousted Thandenar in the 13th. Did the more progressive candidate win every race? No. But it was a good night.

And lest anyone forget, this isn't some liberal bastion. This is Michigan, a perpetually purple/battleground state. And while the metro Detroit area does have the largest Arab population in the US, El-Sayed actually lost Detroit to Stevens. He racked up his margins everywhere else.

As a Michigan resident who voted for El-Sayed, here are my thoughts on last night's primary: 1) As much as I thought and hoped that El-Sayed would win, I'm still kind of shocked he did. He's Muslim, Egyptian-American, and a self-proclaimed socialist. He was outspent by over $60 million. And he won.
