I *might* play around with a more direct nohello style website later, but for now, this should suffice.

I know a couple of similar short domains for the meat proxy already exist that replicate nohello.net, but I didn't quite like how any of them where written, and I think the original article is already short and sweet. I also like that the author gets direct attribution, and not just a footnote.

Just registered a domain nomeatproxy.net that redirects to the original article "Don't be a meat proxy" by Niklas Gruhn - which gives name to the new pervasive behaviour that plagues workspaces. I wanted a short domain that I could put it on my Slack status, where I'd previously have nohello.net

As some of you may have noticed, I've joined the editorial team of the legendary iOS Dev Weekly newsletter. It's a huge responsibility and an opportunity to contribute to the Apple developer community, one I don't take for granted.

A major part of my CLAUDE md file is always all of @alexozun.com’s teachings on Type-Driven Design in Swift. It remains, to this day, the most powerful Swift content I’ve ever read. Your agents will output MUCH better code with it. swiftology.io/collections/...

In tests, the same mechanism powers *mock-less* testing of behaviours: observable effects can be intercepted, suspended, and resumed with just-in-time test data, without invasive scaffolding or test-only abstractions in application code, commonly required by DI libs and arch frameworks. #swiftlang

Dijkstra predicted in 1978 how people would feel about #Swift Strict Concurrency checking in 2025.
Text in the image: some people found error messages they couldn't ignore more annoying than wrong results, and, when judging the relative merits of programming languages, some still seem to equate "the ease of programming" with the ease of making undetected mistakes.

I had a blast presenting at #iOSKonf25 this week! I heard great things about this conference and I now can say that the praise was well-deserved! It was pretty scary to be on the lineup with so many accomplished engineers and speakers, but the vibe was really good and everyone was easy to be around.

I think I managed to successfully trick the audience into thinking we were simply describing effects with enums, until finally revealing that we’d actually learned something that *supposedly* requires a PhD in Computer Science to understand (spoiler: it really doesn’t!).

The secret to introducing people to scary-sounding concepts like Free Monads in #swiftlang is in never mentioning these two words until the very end of the presentation.

Feedback like this is what keeps me going (even at my snail's pace 😅)

I primarily draw info from Scala community that has a wealth of info on effect systems. Swift and Scala are closely positioned in this field, both being capable FP langs with expressive type systems, and both being impure, requiring good effect systems and disciplines to control side effects.

Alex Ozun @alexozun.com · 13/03/2025
My article is almost finished and it goes into great detail on various effect systems in Swift, including monadic effects and effect descriptors. I go from first principles, how continuation-passing style gives rise to unidirectional architectures, and how we could possible go back to direct style.

Alex Ozun @alexozun.com · 13/03/2025
There's precious little info on effect systems in Swift community 😔 the largest resource on monadic effects is @pointfree.co and TCA that makes great use of them. Our own architecture at Amex uses effect descriptors, but it's not OSS. The Elm Architecture is the closest resource I know on that.
