Really nice to see this being used - a real blast from the past. If anyone is keen to help get this back on CRAN or do other work on it that would be amazing!

This is the picture my four year old brought home for me today. Me: lovely honey, who's it a picture of? Her: that's me in the pink dress, and that's a dead guy *spotting my horrified look* Her: don't worry, he was bad

I'm giving a free public talk asking 'How certain is certain enough?' at @lshtm.bsky.social on Monday 24th November at 5.30pm, as part of the Global Health Lecture Series. From epidemic response and clinical trials to online misinformation and AI, I'll look at how truth emerges – and why it falters.

When faced with a new health threat, there are three crucial questions we must consider. What is going on? What can we do about it? And how can we communicate these things effectively? This talk will

💡 Open science: A team of researchers at Shandong University has attempted to replicate Oprea (2024 AER). The results do not replicate. Oprea 2024 reported an online lab experiment, and found that prospect theory anomalies occur not only for lotteries, but also for deterministic 'mirrors'.

I know of one account! From a feminist called Finn Mackay (who calls it 'sex dysphoria' for reasons they outline in their book). As someone who has body dsymorphia it sounds quite closely related, phenomenologically. Book is Female Masculinities and the Gender Wars: The Politics of Sex.

I'm writing a series of blog posts on the subject of women and free love, partly out of my interest in the history of free love, partly out of a sort of affectionate prurience about sex-positive women of yore. This first one is about free love in the 1800s and the first woman to run for president.

As great as IVF is, the process of retrieving eggs still feels v inefficient: you have to incubate the eggs inside yourself, inject hormones for a fortnight and hope that the oocytes mature at a similar rate. Maturing them in vitro would be a huge improvement. worksinprogress.co/issue/fertil...

Yeah if you read it as there's demand for curves supplied by models, it doesn't really sound like an explanation as implied by the "because".

Alex Hill @alexlizhill.com · 13/03/2025
I was gifted this mug that I feel sure is offensive to women but I can't quite figure out why, or indeed, what it means at all. Are the economists the ones supplying the curves? Very confusing.
Mug with a picture of a graph that resembles a woman dressed like a stripper, with words: economists do it with models because there's no shortage of demand for the curves that the supply.

Yeah, the observational data is hard to judge. Apparently intersex athletes are something like 100 times overrepresented in elite sports, but non-athletes are also just much less likely to have been tested for DSDs. And of course trans is different from intersex.
010
Alex Hill @alexlizhill.com · 06/03/2025
Agreed, and neither should trans inclusion in sports be pushed for broader ideological reasons, if it harms another underprivileged group (cis women). Big if! I don't know that it does. I think it should be judged on its own merits.
110
Alex Hill @alexlizhill.com · 06/03/2025
That's fair, although I guess I differ in thinking that the burden of proof should be to show that there is no advantage/my prior would be that there is one. I expect if the general public were shown clear evidence that trans athletes have no advantage over cis women, then they'd be won over.
110
Alex Hill @alexlizhill.com · 06/03/2025
You could equally well make an argument (as many do) that adherence to unpopular positions like this radicalises the general public against broader queer acceptance.
120
Alex Hill @alexlizhill.com · 06/03/2025
This is kind of lazy. Banning drag queens would be insanely authoritarian. We already have sex based inclusion criteria for sports, this is just a question of how we make those precise.
120
Alex Hill @alexlizhill.com · 06/03/2025
Agree the case for advantage might differ a lot by sport, and it matters whether the advantage is confirmed or not.
010
Alex Hill @alexlizhill.com · 06/03/2025
Thanks, will have a watch!
010
Alex Hill @alexlizhill.com · 06/03/2025
This is also why I don't think it should be a big issue to fight the public on. It's not very consequential either way? But agree the case could vary a fair bit by sport. Are there sports currently that are mixed sex by default?
010
Alex Hill @alexlizhill.com · 06/03/2025
Maybe it's because I'm not a sports fan that I don't understand the passion this inspires in some people. I'd just survey the public and go with the majority.
110
Alex Hill @alexlizhill.com · 06/03/2025
I really don't have a fixed opinion on trans women competing in women's sports - I think both sides are arguable - but the majority of the public are against it and that's clearly a reasonable position to take, so I don't know why it's the hill so many left/liberal politicians want to die on.

The first time I read The More Loving One by W.H. Auden, I imagined it must be a sort of metaphor or allegory about loving a person, and struggled to understand it. When I read it as straight-forwardly about relating to nature and the whole indifferent universe, I get a lot more out of it.
